If you say, "manually actuated electrohydraulic gearbox" to most people, they have no idea what you are talking about. The average person also has no idea what a torque converter is either. At least based on my experience. : )

    And this.

A lot of F1 naysayers have probably never driven one. Well, I was that way before I got hooked.

I love my F1, but I see the 6-speed vs F1 debate to be very refreshing sometimes. It is all about driving a Ferrari, and some people prefer the quick gear changes of the F1, while others feel the Ferrari Heritage when they are shifting the metal them-self. On the other side of the pond, my friends with Lamborghini Countachs and Diablos have all but stop driving their cars, so as to protect their "investment". As long as our cars are on the road and we are having fun, we all win.

Personally I hope the 6-speed keeps commanding a premium, and forces F1 prices further down, would love to add a 360 F1 down the line.

I love driving the F430 to work, we are all winning!!! We are driving Ferraris!!!

    Still legally considered an automatic.

Requiring a torque converter to consider it an automatic technically incorrect as well.

It is an automatic and like most more traditional automatics has a capability to be manually shifted.

Oh the irony of the thread! Can we just agree to disagree? Just like politics or religion, there really aren't absolutes. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and trying to impose yours on others is futile.
Shall we debate tabs vs spaces, abortion vs pro-life, or Coke vs Pepsi next? :)

I wish more Sellers listing their 430s For Sale would only list 6MT cars as Manuals. Ferrari Dealers seem to have the biggest offenders that post F1 trany cars in the "Manual" category.

This is almost as good as a cambelt thread. Plus we can drag the F430 owners into it and they could care less about cambelts.

Brian- Mine is not an automatic because in nearly 7 years of ownership, I have never pressed that little Auto button once.

I like this dialog when it pops up because I get to search my mind for adjectives to describe my experience. The manually initiated, synthetically executed shifting cars are OK by me. ;-)

    1. I think it is 2 pedal owners who are insecure. They always have to tell us how much faster they are on a track even though the difference is very small and 99.5% never put a wheel on a track anyway. I also wonder how many 2 pedal owners can actually execute a decent heel/toe downshift? I know some can but I suspect they are a minority.

    2. I have a Toyota Tundra where I can "shift manually" with an actual stick that operates like a sequential shift----just like a real race car!

    3. Under definitions of automatic, you will never find a discussion of torque converters but, if it makes floppy paddle drivers feel better, so be it. Automatic merely describes operation, not mechanical internals.

Well sure, anything that can be automatically shifted is technically an automatic transmission.

My point is that its function and use is dramatically different than a traditional-modern-auto, which typically have a torque converter. Disregarding the whole new-ish beast that is a dual-clutch transmission.

    Never!

Coffee? I have no cupholders in my car actually. Plus the engagement during real acceleration would lead to coffee ejection all over the cabin ; )

    Great thread topic. ;)

Long story short, the answer is yes.

Most stick shift owners are just people who enjoy their cars and could care less. But there are enough manual internet cool guys out their with chips on their shoulders who perform such antics and it has the described result.

In countries where you have to do your driving test in a manual in order to legally drive a manual, they do not accept anyone using a flappy paddle gearbox (even if its one with a clutch). Doing your test with a flappy paddle gearbox means automatic license only.

Pointless debate isn't it. Everyone has their preference...I like both. Not the early, slow systems but I really like the F1 superfast II. Given the choice I would take the manual in most cars. A LaF I wouldn't consider in manual however. Neither the F12 and, I never thought I'd utter these words, I can see a real benefit of the 599 GTO having F1 only...Ideally one would need 2 GTO's had they given the option which gearbox you wanted. I don't think I could make the choice if I ordered from new. I can imagine ordering it in F1 and then, the day before I would pick it up, ask them to make it manual instead...

    "better" in what sense?
faster shifting c resultant faster track time - F1 wins every time
more "connected" to the machine. More human-car connection. A case can be made for manual.

Enzo also mentioned "The horse doesn’t push the cart, it pulls it". if he had his way, there will never be a mid-engine Ferrari.
