Does anyone know if a socket is made from something other than tool steel for wheel bolts. I don't use an impact but a regular socket seems to mark the plating and will cause problems later. I have 360 modulars on My Mondial with 360 bolts not Chinese. thanks for any help

There are also aluminum-lined 22mm (7/8") flank-drive sockets available from e.g., Snap-On, OZAT -- do a search on "OZAT" for prior threads.

Even Autozone carries aluminum 22mm six pt sockets with a nylon insert inside to protect the head, and a nylon outer sleeve to protect the wheel. Check and inspect whatever you select, but I saw them tonight at a local store.

I have a complete set of metric and English I got from Griot's Garage.
Bring the socket to any tire shop...you can't trust they have the right ones...I've had them messed up before.

Amazon has plenty with the protective nylon on the inside.

The problem with the nylon inserts is that the nylon tends to crack and fall out. Groits with the aluminum inserts work the best of the ones I have used.

If it ever falls out I will glue it back in, and I would think the aluminum would still nick things up.

It doesn't, in my experience. As mentioned previously, I have the complete set in metric and English from Griot's Garage. Ferrari of Seattle uses them exclusively as well.

I should have been more clear the nylon insert cracks into pieces and can not be re-inserted. I know I bought 2 of them. My Porsche has painted lug nuts and the aluminum insert does not damage them. I have also placed saran wrap inside the socket and tried that still no good. The aluminum insert works the best.

    Yeah.

I would think this would work just fine. And cheaper too.

I don't use an air gun and my 25 year old TR bolts look new and all I use is a plain old steel socket.

Soft sockets are needed for the alloy P Wagen nuts but the chrome bolts do just fine with steel sockets.

I guess I am confused....Griots no longer seems to sell the wheel socket sets, as I cannot find them on their website. But the version I have are aluminum with nylon outer jackets, and nylon center insert. I have had them for many years, with no issues...though I admit I only use them 4 or 5 time a year. I can't see how the nylon insert would break when using hand tools...impact wrench? Sure.

There is another version with aluminum inserts?

I would agree, a plain steel 6 pt deep socket (so it doesn't bottom out on the head) is probably fine with hand tools, but I wanted the extra insurance of an aluminum socket.
