Took the Silhouette to get its wheel alignment checked at the weekend. They all look reasonably aligned, but rather (un)surprisingly the computer didn't have the factory settings in its memory bank. Anyone know what the factory settings should be?

It seems 40080 is longer on the website. Does anyone know if it has been sold?

I had the Silhouettes carbs checked and tuned yesterday. This was done by Andy Cattani near Gatwick, he tunes many of the historic cars that race at Goodwood. It was running a little rich at idle revs and the air flow had to be adjusted a little, but the carbs are all okay and it was given a clean bill of health. Some pictures and videos below...

First the air flow into the carbs was checked and set at 5kg/hour for each inlet. Listen carefully and you can hear the engine note change as Andy adjusts the air flow.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGzfqGQImts

Then the engine was run through its complete rev range, well almost. Discretion overcame valour at the top end and it was only taken to 7300, the red line is 7500. In the enclosed space the noise was tremedous. The smoke is crap being blown out of the system (note to self: must remember to thrash it more often).

At 7300 revs it was making 161 bhp at the wheels, which is 235 at the flywheel. So at 7500 revs its probably making about 240 bhp compared to about 260bhp when new. Although Italian horses are the smaller DIN hp whereas this dyno measured in James Watts hp which are a little bigger. So a good result, not too many horses have escaped in the last 38 years.

Max torque is at 4000 revs. Fuel/air ratio is 10.6:1 at idle but in the ideal range of 11.5-12.5 through the power range.

Colin Clarke rebuilt the engine a few years ago and he obviously did a good job.

Air flow into each carb all 5kg/hour

I'm not sure where those often quoted 260/265 BHP numbers originally came from but the Silhouette sales brochure states 250 HP (DIN) at 7500 revs, the same as the P300. The conclusion must be that BHP was not as overstated as some might think and may even have been achieved with 100 octane leaded fuel.

That is the first pic of 40046 I have seen in its original colour.

Although it appears to have a tinted band windscreen there is also an aerial on the rear panel. This Autosonic Universal Electronic CM41 Antenna was often fitted to cars that had a clear screen as there was no embedded aerial.

I think the clear screen may have been replaced with a tinted one as the screen surround is stainless and unpainted. Raymond, when new would a clear screen have been a Swiss requirement?

There is no such requirement, tinted are allowed as long as they don't change the colors in the way you can't recognize a red light any more.

Great period pictures, thanks for sharing!

The silver Silhouette I believe is #40022 , a car which went to Japan.

Wow every p118 pic (and 3/4 static) I've seen driven hard you can see the chassis flex at the b-pillars. look carefully at all the silhs and you can see a break at the crease of the doors where they deviate from the body panels. With the black lower paint this more evident.

I've notice this is less of a problem with reinforced jalpas and virtually non existent on the urraco with the fixed roof

silhs are such rare cars and should be kept stock IMHO but it would be tempting to use some of the reinforcements found on the jalpas. I suppose the removable tunnel brace would be a great place to start.

Thank you for posting the wonderful pics! anymore were these came from?
