No, not true. I didn't have a background in aviation when I started and there is a trainee that's just joined my group who also doesn't have a background in aviation so nothing has changed criteria wise in all those years.

I haven't checked it lately, but I think you need at least Year 12 or equivalent Maths and Physics to begin with. The rest is all internal testing to see if the applicant is suited to the job.

If selected for training, there's about a 12 month ATC course with critical milestones along the way which need to be achieved to continue.

Initial selection is different for applicants with ATC experience (ie ex RAAF or international ATC's) Training is condensed for successful applicants with experience.

Many years ago in the middle of the Indian Ocean on a very hot and bumpy night we could hear a female Australian voice trying to pass a position report to Colombo on H.F. The call-sign sounded like "Qantas Tin". After about fifteen minutes of being repeatedly stepped on by Madras, Bombay and Singapore and having her signal fading out and coming back in again she eventually got her message through.
Loud and clear a very superior British voice said "Good on you, sheila!".

"Up your arse, Pom" was her immediate response!

We thought it must have been the pilot in command from post #428!

    *shakes head*

Pilot to engineer: "Here's the aircraft for the scheduled inspection. Everything is working perfectly"

    Engineer: "righto"

    After inspection....

    Pilot: "Nothing is working"...

    :)

A few people in Sydney may have family snaps of aircraft around the shore hidden away in shoe boxes - search them out - let the world see them.
    Here is one.

Roulettes in Perth today. Bit of a smaller crowd than I imagine they're used to! Only about 20-30 people at the start of the display, another ten or so stopped to watch as they walked or cycled past. R7 doing mic-free commentary to the small group, armed with a flight bag full of stickers and a handheld radio. Nice guy :)

I'm thinking of obtaining a CPL, but at the age of 32 as a new grad, what are my chances of flying full-time for an airline?

Fairly slim. But why limit yourelf to an airline job?

Plenty of other more interesting flying jobs around, even if they pay a little less.

Congratulations. But that would hardly be the norm.

Did you go straight from 700 single VFR to Virgin?
If so, surely you must have been "blue starred" or you were very chummy with more than a couple of people within.

Don't see many of these in Oz, and this is the first I've seen with winglets.

Shame, as they are one of the coolest airliners ever.

Nice one mate. I've noticed at least two separate ones in the last few days flying around. There's a fair chance that was one of them!

Not in the dead of night but just as the sun was setting. Sometime ago I posted these two - but I don't think on the Aussie A.T.

I love seeing these night shots of big cities. Thank you. :)

Being from a small country town, I LOVE the big smoke and am looking forward to living in a capital city one day.

Not working.........................just living in the city. :p
