I recently got my first Ferrari (and first exotic). Today I was thumbing through the fine print of our insurance policy and noticed some pretty alarming stuff in there. I knew about the mileage restrictions, and that was fine, but I also saw this:

It also explicitly says I cannot use the car for "errands" or "daily activities".

Is this common? Should I be looking for new insurance? What I have now isn't exactly cheap anyway ($2500, perfect driving record, 30 years old).

I have State Farm with a writer that says 7500 miles or less/year. No restrictions on where I can drive it. Less than $1200/year. I'm 56 with mutli-car and homeowner's with SF as well.

And based on your little bio, you're from Florida as well. Man, I feel like I'm getting screwed. I will have to call SF ASAP.

Maybe some of it has to do with age. I've got a lot of run-around with insurance companies because I'm not 30 yet (I will be in May). What are other people out there near 30 paying?

Don't accept a policy like that. I'm 30 too and in shopping insurance for my 430 the rates I am quoted are quite a bit higher than others here on the board.

It is not like they are screwing him over, that is a quote from a classic car insurance company (Hagerty, Grundy, Leland, etc) yes they are cheaper but they have some restrictions.
I believe Hagerty allows you to commute or run errands sporadically.
Good thing of collectors policies is the stated amount is what you get, but they limit you the usage.
With a regular company (in my case progressive) I have an stated amount BUT they will pay stated or market value whichever is lesser, but the usage is like any other car.

+ 1 State Farm was about the same for me and when I replaced my 430 spider with a 458 spider it went up only 200$ / year . I'm 57

This is quite true on classic car insurance.

Just find a great deal on conventional insurance from a leading insurance company like AllState or similar. There will be no restrictions on conventional insurance. You can enjoy the car and not think about miles or if your driving it for "pleasure" which is always in the mercy of the adjuster when a collision occur. Ultimately, it's up to them, depending on the circumstances if your driving for pleasure or not.

I'm in my late 20's in California with AllState with a premium of approx $1,300 per year with 100k comp and collision coverage. No restrictions and unlimited miles. I can drive the car anywhere even at a junk yard and it will still be covered.

Why worry for all these restrictions with classic car insurance? I will only consider this if I'm driving a real classic car like an older Ferrari where the blue book value is crap but the market value or auction potential is really high.

I don't think the savings with classic car insurance can justify the thought process that I have to go through before I can drive the car if it's covered or not and the limited miles. Just my 2 cents.

I just got an online quote from Statefarm for only $1200/year for the F430 with only mileage being restricted (7500 miles). Quite reasonable, really.

It is only about $355 extra to increase to over 7,500 miles per year on my 2007
430 Spider with State Farm. I have my homeowners and 4 other cars with them.

Have you tried Allstate? No limits nor restrictions on mine and it's only $1,300 a month. Just a $100 more from your Statefarm quote and you got the freedom to enjoy your ferrari on the roads even more.

I hope you meant 1300 per year. Otherwise 1300 per month would be higher than the balls on a giraffe ! :)

I've been with State Farm since I bought my first Dino, in 1976. I have homeowner's insurance and coverage for five other cars with them, including an F430 Spider and a 458 Spider. I looked into Hagerty a few years ago, and, in addition to a higher premium, they were most concerned about garage alarms, etc. You don't need a "specialty" company unless you have something really unusual, like a Duesenberg SJ or a thirties European classic. The convenience of one insurance company for home and cars is also a plus. Fred
