Car bubble - can someone explain? I honestly don't understand how this would work. Another financial crisis is easy to understand - not as many people can afford the car, so supply beats demand and prices drop. But, what has to occur for a car's bubble to burst without a downturn in the economy? What, we all just agree one day that the 16M is not worth these prices and market crashes back to $200k? I'm in the market for 4 cars, including the 16M, that seem to have many wondering if the car is on a bubble, and would like to know.

I think what many forget is that new cars are also getting more expensive. A new 911 Turbo S with lots of options is nearing 200K US (as is a loaded turbo panamera). That lends support to cars like the Scud and 16M.

It leaves many sports car buyers thinking I could:
    A. Buy a 991 Turbo S, have an exciting, fast but very civil car but be guaranteed to have significant depreciation if bought new.
    or
    B. Buy, Scud/16M/CS have a car that is exciting and an "event" to drive and probably lose very little if anything in depreciation while having something truly special in the garage.

Add to that, many of the first phase "latest greatest" buyers already bought and sold their 16Ms and now they are starting to fall into the hands of collector type buyers. IMHO that is why the supply was around 13-15 cars about 2 years ago compared to the few on the market now.

As you implied, the only thing I see that could really be a threat is an economic down turn. When that happens often all bets are off. While the 16M has appreciated--it has not necessarily done so at a huge rate of out performance compared to the CS (or many other limited Ferrari's) or classic 911s for example.

    Just my two cents.

    Let's see....
As fast as the previous supercar around many race tracks...check
Somewhat limited production (less than some previous supercars)...check
Killer good looks that does not appear dated.....check
    Incredibly fun to drive.......check
High tech without dumbing and dulling things down....check
Outstanding present value compared to most other exotics.....check
Awesome sounding (especially when compared to what will be produced by future turbo models.......check

IMHO these are the characteristics that people covet and will continue to covet. That is what makes a classic and a car that will appreciate over time. Raw factory cars are special, more fun for some and stand out compared to the ultra-smooth offerings of today.

Just took a look at auto trader listed 16M offers. Looks like driving emotions raised their price to 340K.

Other cars listed are the former red Miami rental w/14k miles for 275K. Also another black car w/ 8K miles for 300K.

Looks like, as per post above, Ron Tonkin has another black one for sale for 270K with some after market wheels. Low relative to the others so wondering if there is a story there.

I respectfully disagree, it is not Tonkin but the BH dealer is the one for $299k in AutoTrader.

I was saying there were the three cars on auto trader + the Tonkin car you mentioned further up. By car is 299 and Tonkin car is 259. The Tonkin car looks like it has aftermarket wheels.

While these increased values are looking good for many 16m owners, nobody can say where the price is heading, if it means anything I have owned my 16m for 4 years and it's similar to the black one for sale but it's rossa scuderia and if it means anything I wouldn't sell it for 340k.

    It's a keeper.

I tend to think that what you said is representative of what is going on with the 16M market. Namely, these cars are transitioning to those who want them as "keepers" or are putting them into a collection of other cars they never intend to sell. As opposed to those who want the latest and greatest flavor of the month--a phase the 16M already went through.

The keeper mentality is flourishing for both Scuds and 16M. The quick traders have weeded themselves out putting these cars in people's hands who will love them for a long time. This has resulted in fewer cars for sale with good cars in desirable colors experiencing upward pricing pressure while undesirables are still capable of languishing. Markets are fickle and by summer's end a new trend can result. This is a common occurrence in thinly traded markets.
