    Thanks for your help.

So if I buy a near new car less than 2 yrs or 6,000kms I don't pay VAT in the country of purchase only the country of registration?

    Is this correct?

What about if it is 3 years old and has 10,000kms.

Do I still have to pay VAT again in the new country of registration?

You could also consider leasing it. The car can be leased VAT free - you DO pay VAT on the monthly, but it'll be less than the VAT on the entire car. If you make a deposit of the value of the car, the monthly will be low. They can also handle the insurance for you.

    That is an interesting concept.

I always prefer to pay cash, however to save 20% is not such a bad Idea.

Should leasing be used for business reasons or can it be done for personal?

I did it personally on one car - if you can in your business depends a lot on where etc, your accountant can tell you that. I put the entire price down as deposit, so the monthly cost was basically just insurance. The point was just to avoid loss on VAT when selling.

I don't need it for business, I just thought that they may only lease for Business purposes.

Great Idea, I would put the entire amount down as the deposit too.

Did you do this in Europe or USA?

I agree that registering a car in Germany is hard without residence. I bought a car to use before I arrived here and the car registration and insurance was hard till I got a lease on a house which allowed me to register where I lived with the state. Then I could register a car. It was quite hard going as I don't speak German and had to go back a few times. You can use a temp plate for about 5 days only. It includes insurance but only valid five days. I am not sure of a limit on renewals but I did three times.

Plus side of leaving your car in Frankfurt is proximity to derestricted autobahn....

I found a similar problem in Italy.

Even though I hold an Italian passport.

If you have an Italian passport I imagine it could be worked out here in Germany. Just need an address to register from and I think that could be arranged rather easily.

I wonder if you can import from our Saudi market as we have EU spec cars mostly. Prices are cheaper that anywhere else. PM me if intrested I have a 2015 with 1600 km on it .

So, I now have insurance based on using a secure storage facility in the UK and my Australian License.

Now all I need to do is get over to Europe and go shopping.

At this stage ETA is 2 weeks.

    Info required regarding VAT.

If I buy a car in Germany that is 2 years old and 10,000kms.

Do I need to pay VAT in Germany and then VAT again when bringing into the UK?

If you can prove that vat has been paid in one EU territory then no more is payable if moving to another

Try to ensure you get the EU certificate of conformity from the seller as these are expensive from Ferrari (approx £ 500-1000) and required for UK registration

There may be other hoops required too eg lights & speedo but get the car first (fairly sure there are other threads about importing new-ish eu cars to uk)
