Totally looks like something that would happen to me. I was gluing a transom strip down the other day and I put the pl400 on the floor and carefully lowered the strip into place and I lost my grip and it flipped over and the exposed part of the strip ended up in the glue. Glad to see other people have these issues!

I've done worse... When you forget to check if the oil catch tank is empty things get messy quick.
And it's frustrating watching it happen and realize nothing will stop it.

Best oil change mess I have seen was a guy that had the old gasket stay stuck on and a double gasket situation doesn't seal up too well. He fired the thing up and there was an immediate spray of oil everywhere including in the front right wheel well and covering the tire. I immediately started yelling at him to shut it off but it made a huge mess and he had a heck of a time getting the situation sorted out as everything was quite slippery. I didn't stick around to see him leave but I always wondered how the car drove with one very slippery front tire.

A double gasket is one of the worst things. I've done it, seen plnty of others do it as well. Most newbies will get one, especially the way filters get tucked up now.
As for clean up, it takes a while for sure.

Surely I'm not the only one who uses a funnel with a wire mesh screen so I can always check for any bits & pieces that might be floating around? That sure keeps the drain plug, washer, or any gaskets from creating such a mess...
