To bring this topic back again:

What do you think about the recent prices (i.e. at the last RM auction at Villa Erba)?
Do you think that the development of the recent years will continue or decline again?

    Greetings

IMO the f40 did well considering the mileage and that pristine examples have sold at 1.6

f50 and enzo seemed very soft considering the pristine cars have sold for 2.5M plus

288 did ok at 2M with pristine examples going for 3M+

Also these are Euro cars. Unless you want to deal with the government agencies to bring a Euro F50/Enzo, your only choice if you are a US buyer is to buy what's here already which are the ones selling for 2.5m+.

On top of that, the yellow Enzo had a very busy life. Its original owner drove it like we all dream of.

To answer your second question first, we can see that values for some cars have already begun to retract somewhat, and I believe they will continue to do so in some instances.

To answer your first question, rather than opine on the results, lets look at the facts:

The 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO ZFFPA16B000052475 sold for €1,904,000, and considering the fact that it had @ 50,000 kilometers, and considering both its current condition & past provenance, this was a realistic price for this GTO. As I have said elsewhere, the current market is very much on a car-by-car basis, and all the Ferrari Supercars sold @ Villa Erba prove the point.

The 1991 Ferrari F40 ZFFGJ34B000089693 sold for €1,008,000, and again, considering this F40 had 41,000 kilometers, this price was very good. The current market is very much about the spread, and I am seeing F40s from $950k to $1.5m.

The 1996 Ferrari F50 ZFFTA46B000106570 sold for €1,232,000, and here too, considering the car had 36,000 kilometers, the price was appropriate. We will see more similar numbers I think in the months to come.

Lastly, the 2002 Ferrari Enzo ZFFCZ56B000129581 sold for €1,260,000, one of a few Enzos with @ 30,000 kilometers, and as someone already pointed out, the number attained was commensurate for this particular car and its charmed life.

The Villa Erba sale paints a picture which is not difficult to see, and it puts today's market in perspective, at least for those who are unbiased and objective.

    Hope this helps.

    Very interesting, thank you!

@amenasce, good point, I didn't take that into consideration. Regarding the Enzo or F50, are there major mechanical differences between Euro/US spec?

I'm absolutely no expert, and I happily own a 9K kms F50 and a 13K kms (non cat and non AS!) F40. And love them both. So I'm not definitely not neutral.

However per future values, UBS/PwC has just published their "Billionaire Report".

Amazingly they interviewed 1300 billionaires who combined are worth a cool 5.4 trillion US dollars. 63% are self-made compared to 43% 20 years ago. In the US the financial services sector is according to the FT "the dominant source of new fortune spawing 30% of self-made billionaires since 1995". And the new tech billionaires are worth an eye popping average of 7.8 billion US dollars each.

What is key however is the massive growth in Asian wealth compared to 1990. Now 36% of the world's billionaires are from Asia and the report expects Asia to become the centre of new billionaire wealth creation.

Perhaps for the 288 GTO, F50, F40, 599 GTO, 458 SA and such like that sort of Asian prediction sounds just about ideal. A finite supply of very special Ferraris (especially limited edition models) and a host of new mega rich young entrepreneurs who are/will be entering the "big" car collection habit over the coming years.

Who knows but for good or bad, the world is changing rapidly.

I do believe the Asian market for exotics/collectibles will continue to grow. If my information is correct, there are several Enzos already in China. The Enzo was never officially imported into that market, according to the info given. This illustrates the demand from that market for these exotics. I would not be surprised that the other Super Ferraris find their way to mainland Chinese collectors/enthusiasts in the coming years, legally imported or otherwise.....

It looks like the F50 and Miura would be tied. Both are around 1.2-1.5m Euros depending on mileage/condition. Your 10k F50 would probably be closer to 1.5m Euros.

As someone who specializes in these cars (288 GTO/F40/F50/Enzo) almost exclusively, actually, Ive been slightly disappointed by the reality that thus far, the much-heralded coming of droves of Supercar buyers from the Far East simply has not materialized. We have been hearing about this impending boom for the past 5 years, and whilst we have all sent cars there (in my case examples of all of the Ferrari Supercars mentioned above), the number of new buyers emanating from that region looking for cars has not changed significantly in the past few years, so IMHO that market has not grown - for these particular cars.

Colleagues of mine I have spoken with feel the same way.

As someone who tracks sales closely, I can see that the vast majority of the buyers remain from the USA & Europe, then the Middle East, with the Far East providing a small (but significant) percentage which has remained largely unchanged in recent years.

The future? As always, nothing but pure speculation.

Joe, your info is noted. Based on my limited information from my contacts there, it appears that the Chinese market does have the appetite for these supercars, albeit a small one at this point, relative to the other markets. I can only speculate the Chinese market will grow based on 3 things: 1) relaxing of importation policies, 2) evolution of car culture, and 3) availability of wealth.....
