Was driving my scud this morning and picked up a cup of coffee. Since I didn't have anywhere to put the coffee, I just held it in my hand and put the car into "auto." I never use the auto mode and forgot how truly awful it is. Expected it to short shift but didn't expect it to be so slow and jerky.

Anyone know why this is? What's the difference between me pulling a paddle and the car automatically shifting and the car just automatically shifting on it's own? I would expect the shifts to be about the same.

Never tried the Auto mode in my 430... everyone warned me that using auto mode and too much reverse is the quickest way to toast the clutch on these cars...

If you want true auto mode you need to get a car with DCG-gearbox like 458. I think the Auto mode works OK in my Scuderia. It isn't a mode to drive the car in for longer periods but for shorter I think it is OK.

I never drive it on auto mode. From my understanding it's not good for the clutch.

To be clear, I don't use auto and don't want to/plan to in the future. Just curious as to why there is such a big difference. Maybe because I drive around in RACE, in which shifts happen faster? In auto, the shifts are slow and, as a result, your head ends up bobbing forward then backward with each shift.

The couple times my GF drove my car, she used the auto mode (mostly freeway, so not a lot of gear changes). I didn't notice the shifting as being jerky or slow...seemed normal to me...but did appear to short shift to a higher gear like a typical automatic transmission.

Maybe Rifledriver can comment on that...I was told that was an issue with early F1 cars like the 355 and early 360s, but less of a concern with later cars.

If driving the car in auto tends to wear the clutch faster, what about extended driving in race mode, same thing?

My "regular" 430 does OK in auto mode--slower shifting than I do, but acceptable. I read some posts in the past suggesting it is not bad for the clutch? When I get a slow down yellow I put it in auto for a minute.... Temporary fix!

Having an E60 M5 with SMG, I really liked the auto on the f430 and scud. If you talk about jerky, drive an M5. I can live with the scud but not the SMG.

That's why I appreciate the pdk in my GT3. Auto or manual, no problem. No jerky neck.

Same experience; my wife drives the Scud always in auto-mode and it works very well. Never noticed a difference in in the shift times compared to the manual mode.

Maybe you drove very careful with the coffee in your hand? Don't forget: also in the manual mode the F1 shift times are different and depending of the driving style.

Dave , you could invest in one of those removable cup holders . While they are not particularly attractive it might do the trick. However I'm not sure if they work in a scud. I've seen them in the 430.

When I bought my 360, the sales guy told me auto mode was a race to sixth gear. It shifts at lower RPM's unless you are into the throttle.

Often re-quoted but really no evidence to support this claim. It is restated so often that it is now urban legend and many assume it to be true. Use some logic, the clutch and actuation program are the same so how do you get different wear? The pros say auto doesn't wear the clutch more. Even if there is a minor difference in engagement speed it isn't like it is slipping the clutch all of the time. How much impact do you think it really has?

This group spends WAY too much time worrying about clutch wear. Particularly in light of the number of miles driven in a year. Do you really care if the clutch lasts 10.5 years instead of 10 years? I don't.

People should drive a Porsche PDK. That auto sucks...boring and no life. F1 auto has life to it

I think this is it. If you were driving very slowly and shifting very early in manual mode, it would feel the same, but you never short shift like that in manual mode.

As to why it short shifts, could it be an EPA thing? They test mileage and emissions in auto mode and it helps the numbers?

No problems with the gated six spd.

    Don't drink coffee either...
