Pantera values?

Sooo...back on topic...what are the price ranges for early cars? L models? GTS? And later cars (as above). Where do you see the market headed? Or perhaps the question is buy, sell, hold? ;-)

Buy original. The Pantera is THE most undervalued exotic.

Stay away from anything that isn't original.

Volvo's are appreciating faster than modified Pantera's

I have original now...bu it is seldom used these days. The car is a true preservation time capsule. Hard to choose it over the Astons and my recently acquired 550 for a drive...with my limited time available to enjoy them however. Of course I will hang on to it and keep it serviced and occasionally driven if that is the best choice. I still get a kick out of owning it. Just wondering if now is a good time to sell, and perhaps exchange for the missing 1960s piece of my small collection (should have never sold my unique 66 Shelby).

 

Who can predict if it is a good time to sell? Kind of like the stock market. Shelby's are nice but I would rather have a Pantera. Exotic and timeless. I have a new and old one so I am biased.

 

I'm sure most Pantera owners that have spent thousands modifying their cars feel their car is worth more than what the market will pay, no surprise there. It's the unmodified cars that were left alone that will drive the upward movement. Every other marque's owners/clubs try to restore their cars to there original specs, there's a good reason for it. Return on investment.

IMO Hagerty's is one of the best price guides, they update it every month and they use data from lot's of sources unlike other guides. Looking at Volvo P1800 and comparing them to the same year Pantera they are even. It's a 34% gain so I was a little off.

I choose the Volvo to make a point, but to really make it a fair comparison take a look at Intermecchanica's, Iso's, Apollo's, Jensen Interceptor's or Facel Vega's they all outperform on increase of value percentage wise.

Pantera values have been held down by all the modified cars out there, but in that market there is value. The unrestored original cars and IMO they are a good buy right now.

 

I agree with that for the most part. The time capsule cars will usually bring the most money. Of course there are always exceptions. The problem with Pantera's is some owners go to far with their modifications. A few updates to make the car more reliable usually doesn't hurt the values too much.

 

I agree that the stock originals are always the ones to bring top dollar when it comes to any of the classic sports cars. Once folks start modifying the classics their values slide or fail to keep pace with what they should be at.

When someone transplants an LS6 engine into a Pantera it's the same as someone yanking out the 427 Side-Oiler out of an original AC Cobra and dropping in a small block Chevy. Gee, that will certainly make it more valuable. Why not yank those old brakes & weld in some stiffeners for the chassis on that original 427 Cobra & get rid of those stock Cobra rims & bolt on some new 18" ones, and surely its value will double don't you think?

I think the highly modded cars are one of the reasons Pantera prices have lagged for so long. To collectors, just how valuable of a car can a Pantera be if folks are willing to cut them up to fit their needs. Yank the original engine out of them & put a different manufacturers in them? No problem, it's just a Pantera.

Ever see anyone hack up an ISO Grifo to "make them better"? Wouldn't it just be lovely to see a Bizzarrini with a couple of four barrel holleys on top of a tunnel ram poking up thru the hood; that would bring top dollar for sure.

Sooo...do you think $100K for an original is all the money in the world right now...or cheap?

I just received a notification from Gullwing motors today regarding an 84 Countach. $395K! Not long ago, these were unloved and inexpensive (same for the TR). Now big bucks. Can Panteras follow?

 

At the present, 100k for an early car is all the money. Just a guess. In the future, who knows? I am still unsure as to why some of those other cars have appreciated the way they have in such a short period. I hope it is not a bubble. Pantera's have risen slow but steady.

 

I think $100K for a mint, low mile, mostly original Pantera should be the absolute bottom end. The majority of people don't know very much about the true nature of the car. As Leno so aptly put it "It is the most misunderstood, undervalued Supercar in history."

As more people do their homework and as the car continues to get exposure, I think they will eventually take their rightful place.

The car is about 99% Italian. The only Ford parts to be found in the entire car are the engine (with it's associated components/accessories), side marker lights, and the outside mirror!

I think that once the prices go high enough you're going to start seeing folks who view their cars as something to be enjoyed as well as a bit of an investment return their cars back to stock or near stock condition.

 

Countach production numbers are around 2000 vs 7000 for the Pantera, which partially explains the price difference. Being one of the all time poster cars doesn't hurt. The Gullwing Countach has already been sold.

 

..and the steering wheel...

 

I forgot about that; the same one they used on the German Capri GT.

Interested in seeing where this goes. I am looking for a pre-L but 70K would be the absolute top for me. I think a good driver with the typical updates should run $50K to $65K. Definitely not talking original trailer queen here. Anything above $70K and I feel like I shift focus to a 360. That is just me.

On a side note the Pantera is finally the car where my wife looks at it and appreciates the lines of my 308. She hates the Pantera in pictures but I am really starting to appreciate the sharp wedge lines of 70s design.

Jerome, that's a great looking car. For the semi-purist, a simple wheel, seats and belts change would make it appear very stock-looking. I hope it sells well, as it looks like you've done a lot of sensible improvements and priced it reasonably. What are the seats from originally?
