I have a F430 F1 and am in the process of selling my car. It has a clean car fax and has been expected by two (2) different professional 3rd parties who each spent several hours inspecting this car and found no evidence of damage/structural repair or paint work.

I sent my car to the Mannheim auto auction and the inspection came back that this car had paint thickness of 8 to 10 mills and they concluded that the car was in an accident.
Both the paint/ body and mechanical specialists who inspected my car strongly disagree...

Have read on this forum that most "F430's have a great range in paint thickness, between 4.5-7.5 although on some areas of some panels goes as low as 3.5 and on some areas (such as the outside back edge of the trunks) it can range in the 8's."

Is it possible that the Ferrari factory could have delivered this car with a paint thickness of between 8 to 10 mills thick?

    Thank you

It is 100% possible that the car was damaged and touched up either at the factory at the dealer.

These cars have terrible paint and are spotty at best. I agree with the inspectors that the car has had paint work. However, paintwork is not a guarantee of an accident. It is only an indicator of one. You can have paint work because a bird poop stain and a picky owner, you could have paint work because someone accidently spilled sunscreen on the car which stains the paint. You could have paintwork because of a scratch or even if the car is metallic and the factory let it go out splotchy and the dealer caught it and repainted it. If there was a significant amount of bondo on the car the paint meter would not read or would read well over 10.

My question is... why of all places did you send the car to manhiem? Did you buy it there? Are you in the business? YOu must have had someone in the business get the car there. Or you are slightly new to the business and perhaps slightly unfamiliar with Ferraris?

Regardless of your answer... there are better places to take it I am sure.

    Thank you for your response...
I am a private seller. Went to Mannheim because was looking for clean and easy sale.
I have fanatically maintained this car and it is super clean. Fresh Brakes + Clutched is at 80% +

Subscribe here ($15), place an ad here in our Classifieds section, post tons of photos, be completely open and honest about everything (including the paint thickness issue), disclose the VIN upfront, and ask a reasonable price. Sellers who do this typically make clean and easy sales.

Manheim is so concerned about avoiding any kind of post-sale turmoil that they will go so far as to disclose frame damage on cars that have suffered no such damage. You are better off choosing a different venue for a car like this.

Stupid question... Do you have clear film on any panels of the car?

And could every car painted have the EXACT same amount of paint on it?

I wouldn't think so, but what do I know, or care for that matter.
Someone who would bother to measure the paint thickness should be buying new IMO.

Even if the car was damaged, as long as it was repaired properly.

The only film on the car is the front bumper, spoiler and 1/2 of the deck lid

I had stone chips on the front and switched the rear to a challenge grill and repainted the bumper. Very thick paint (quite lovely in fact) and no accident. Quite a conclusion they are jumping to there.

8-10 mills shows it's been painted in that area, it doesn't say it was in an accident.
    ****ing crazy.

So.....if repaired correct who cares if it was in a accident or had paint work done. A 275gtb, 250 gt, almost all have been restored, stripped rebuilt, repainted etc. ex race cars .It's amazing that people are so concerned. My 67 GT500 needed new floors, front right was smushed, ( is that a word?) It's still a 1967GT500. And restored using the original ford frame jigs and parts.
I don't buy it. Some how all Ferrari's never get a door ding, a rock chip, parking curb rash, love tap in the rear, sideways in the rain, crap occurs. Seams I high amount of Ferrari/exotic car owners pay privately to have there car fixed.
Think of all the cars repaired before Car Fax came about. Wow clean Car Fax.....oh except in 1987 it was rear ended because the idiot behind was checking out the car with no idea the Ferrari stops on a dime compared to his toyota. I personally know exotic car owners from back in the day where this sort of thing happened. I also used to work across from Walnut Creek Ferrari and my job was to repair theft recoveries or damaged F-cars. pulled dash boards/ interiors out including Jose Conseco's White TR. Pulled bumpers and sent them off for repair or repaint. I did that for years and F-cars were a weekly gig.
I bet if we took a honest pole there will be a huge amount of oops that occurred to maybe us or someone we know.

Nicely put. This over-protective mentality along with the mileage nazis makes Ferrari ownership a chore. They are machines, driven outside fast. Stuff happens.
