It's interesting about the Testarossa. Most people who don't know what a Testarossa is, actually think it's a NEW Ferrari. At least from my experience. If they ask what it is and I tell them an 1987 Ferrari Testarossa, I get the "oh, a classic car like a Camaro or Mustang" reaction. If I just tell them it's a Ferrari Testarossa, I've noticed people perk up and are more amazed like they're standing next to a La Ferrari or something (ok, maybe not that extreme but still). Try it sometime!

Maybe I'm just used to the Southern CA "car culture". Nope, don't make it out to other parts of the country much.

Better still........just point to the badge with the little horsey on it. They know what it is!!! I have never seen so many people fall over themselves (particularly women) when they know it is a Ferrari. They go from total stranger to wanting to be your best friend when they see that little plaque with the prancing horse. Drives me nuts sometimes. The one I get the most comes from the angry person who asks" Who are you trying to impress with that thing?" My answer usually deflates their ego. I simply reply...."me". Good or bad, it draws people like a magnet.

Wayne, I'm afraid there are hundreds of millions of people in China alone who don't know what a Testarossa is. And I don't mean monks in Tibet. Luxury consumers who were living under old communism when the car became a legend. I had dinner last week with a wealthy gentleman in Shanghai of around 55 who has a 2013 California. I showed him pictures of my cars and he had never heard of a Testarossa, let alone a 512M. Ferrari is a powerful brand in China and people are learning very quickly - that heritage is coming - but for the moment it doesn't have that resonance. "Isn't it old and slow? Does it rattle? It must be uncomfortable! No power steering??" are typical comments when I'm in that part of the world.
I don't mean to be denigratory: China is the second biggest market for Ferrari so they plainly have taste. But they were shut from the world when the Testa was out. Big debate now is whether the classic time will come in China, and Testas with it; and when. Some people I know are betting big on it being soon.

Darius, thanks for that worldly insight, but I lived in East Asia for years and have spent plenty of time in China (one half of my family are from - and currently live in - Shanghai). I don't know if your post was supposed to be sarcastic, but it certainly had nothing to do with either rpissm's comments about the people he encounters in Utah nor my reply.

No, don't do it. Anyone can run into a dealership and buy a supercar (which they all staring to look the same) Once you sell, try to find another TR in a condition which you can live with....not so easy :(

Many 18 to 30 something year olds have never seen a Testarossa in real life. And that is in Orange County. It is an icon anyway you slice it.

It's really funny to se their faces when you tell them it's 30 years old...

About your comment on the La Ferrari i had that experience last year...The Swedish dealer organized a Italian meeting and there was hundreds of F-cars and Maseratis. It was always
crowded around the 2 La Ferraris and my 512TR..Real fun to see when i was drewling over Scuds and Speciales.

So... 45 pages of rehashing the same nonsense on the direction of the Testarossa market wasn't enough? ;)

Personally, I welcome the distraction. Talking about our love for these cars, our experiences with them and comparing them to other cars is more in line with what an enthusiast board should be about.

Treating cars as commodities is the very thing that almost destroyed the hobby for many in the 1980s.

Here is my last comment on Testarossa values....if you want to buy a TR, the best time is now... A piano could fall on your head tomorrow... If you are thinking of selling your TR, forget the market...just make sure you have enjoyed her to the fullest before you decide to surrender the keys... Otherwise, the money in your pocket will be cold comfort as you see her driving away...

I was recounting in good faith something that happened last week. And offering an insight into the classic market in China. It's an interesting time there now. I am a journalist. I edit a number of luxury magazines, including one in China/HK. And several of interest to Ferrari owners at Conde Nast.

I don't see how my comment might have been construed as sarcastic. The fact that people there can revere the Ferrari brand while having little or no knowledge about its heritage is interesting. Most Western brands establish their value through their heritage. This thread commented on the prominence of the Testarossa brand. Most Westerners have heard of Testarossas. Many Chinese have not. Yet it doesn't harm Ferrari's brand equity there.

    That's my observation.
