This car would be a great do it yourself buy. It would be expensive to pay to have the work done by a Ferrari professional.

The Mondial is probably the best DIY car you can buy.

If the car runs and drives, you will do fine.

I had to take the roof liner out of mine to fix another issue. It was not hard to do.

Most of the electrical switches can be located on eBay. Most of the switches I had to replace were direct Mercedes Benz switches. The emergency flasher switch I used to replace mine was the same as a Peugeot.

Other than the motor and transmission, there are a lot of interchangeable parts. Check the FerrariChat interchange thread.

The timing belts are also a DIY job if you follow the FerrariChat threads, especially Birman's thread.

It will be a great driver.

    Good luck and have fun.

for the money Id make it the ultimate island style ALOHA brah car

cover the front seats with neoprene red Hawaiian print
start putting surf stickers all over
lower the back seat and have the cooler(s) sitting there
put an invertor and blender on the other seat
keep the stainless coleman grill in the trunk
couple of sling chairs in the front boot
throw a board rack on the roof

    ALOHA baby! lets shred!

for those of you puking at this you really haven't lived the island life and besides this is a low cost option to "fix" it up

    Hi Dicer,

Assume you will need to do a lot of work on the car. If that's what your looking for, there is no shortage of Ferrari for you to choose! I think 15K is too much from what you described.

I have a friend (Owns a Exotic Service shop) selling a 82 white Mondial 8..I think it is only about 18K miles...he's flexible with the price.

Btw, it's got full 30K service recently - no major issues....if your willing to spend a little more ... you get a working car with no crazy stories...

let me know if you are interested.

No puking here, I LOVE IT!!!!!!! Never in favor of doing anything totally not reversable. I doubt in the middle future prices of these cars will go crazy, I mean dino crazy, but if they do it would be nice to leave it semi restorable.

    What Alfa do you have?

Go look at the car! If nothing else you'll be able to say you drove a Ferrari. One drive should tell you if you want this experience or not. Don't think it's a rocket, but it should sound good. :D

PS, if you want to restore it perfect, pass on this one, probably.

Yes,,, I have a Time Pit also,,, but, I love to wrench and, work on different cars,,,, Etc.
If that car were cherry, it would be worth 19.5 k

    So, that is your budget.

7.5 k,, for Rusty car,,,,, Not worth it.

1982 recalls,,, Front Hubs are Junk and the sunroof pops off, if you open the windows at speed.
    Oh, and,,,,, a
Fuse box will cost you $1300.00 right off the bat.

So, now you have spent $ 2,300.00 with only 10 k to go.
This is how it goes.... Thus, buy a 20,000.00 Mondial and be done.

    Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for everyones two cents! :)

    More info from seller:

Needs the arm for rotor on the front left suspension area i am told.

Additional issues Power windows very sluggish, wiper control works but wand end controller kind of cracked and broken, speedometer not working, gas gauge not registering, odometer stopped working last month, but radio works, both dash board temperature gauges work, and the electronic buttons on left side of dash that open hood, trunk, gas cover all work

    Hi Dicer!

Power Windows are sluggish for all of em'
Wand will cost you $600 plus $400 to install
Gas Gauge (who knows what the real problem may be)
Speedometer (if the problem is just the speedometer, $300 Palo Alto Speedometer)

Definitely get a PPI from a reputable mechanic.

Said Mechanic will come back with X cost to repair those things + Z (cost of 30K service...since he has no clue when belt was changed...got to do it now)

Subtract X+Z from 15K (this is what you offer)

Expect another Y (I would say this value mirrors X from above) to pay after you acquire it to fix things the PPI missed (they will miss things)

    if 15K -( X+Z) + Y + PPI Cost + Shipping/Registration/Tax costs is reasonable to you..Pull the trigger!

Shipping will be around 300 for me but in terms of regestering it and taxes, ¢50. I just would like all of the gauges to work, i could install the motors myself.

The seller would like to trade for my alfa romeo. The wiper switch is 600?

Hi dicer82 so sorry i missed your message about the seller lowering to 7,500.

At that price I would go for it!!!

The stalks are pretty expensive if the stalk itself is cracked. Not sure how bad it is, so it could be minor.

    I thought it was 15k

Good luck!! And let us know how it goes!

Ferraris have a reputation for slow second gear synchros when cold, but they're all individuals. ;)

My recently ex 88 3.2 Coupe had a trans that was smooth as silk in all gears at all [Florida] temperatures.

Otherwise, Mondials are high on the ease of drivability scale. However, just keep the front tire pressures up to help alleviate the low-speed maneuvering effort (in tight parking lots, for example).

Appreciate it! I believe the stalk for the wiper switch is broken but the seller described it as the wand end is cracked and broken. Going to have to fix the speedo, odometer and fuel gauge though :/ I should be flying over the 10th to have a look see!!! :) So the speedo stopped but the odometer worked and now it has stopped, sooo could the speed gen have failed?

Literally flick or smack the Odometer face a few times. I had the same issue on my 8

It works fine now. Do NOT touch the trip reset or anything in that Area.

i have an 81 mondial 8 that i bought 11 years ago front end accident damaged and in a state of neglect, a year to rebuild and to now ten years an 30.000kms later its still an incredable car to drive. sure its going to cost you a little more than the car may be worth in money terms, and they are very high maintaince cars [ they 34 years old ] but the driving experience in a well rebuilt 8 far out weighs the money value.if you are going to do it yourself an if you have a realistic bugdet go for it, the car in question is not a buy an sell project, it will not pay of, however rebuild it an drive for the next ten years it will have payed of ten fold in a truly incredable driving experience.
