Pull the grapes off. For the first few years you want excellent root development and ripening fruit delay root growth. Oh, and are you really planting 4 acres of grapes? Depending on spacing, you're looking at ~400-600 vines per acre or 1,600-2,400 grapevines in all!!! I've been making wine for about 7 years now. Been growing seedless grapes around the pool for the wee ones for 4 years practicing cutting/spraying and now I finally have been getting good clusters. Wine grapes finally will go in during spring 2013. Because I do not live in Californina where sunshine can go on and on but in cold Massachusetts where the same can be said for the rain and snow, I have to restrict myself to fruit and french-american hybrids. I've made some really good wine from even V.Riparia grapes. These are grapes which grow wild along the riverbank. Tasted like a light Pinot Noir! Until I have established my own vineyard, I make wine from anything I can ferment. Grapes sourced from the local UMASS vineyard, rhubarb, apples, pears, peaches, strawberries, maple syrup ect. If I can ferment it I will make it into wine. I currently have 6 gallons Chardonelle (white french-american hybrid), 6 gallons of cranberry wine and 3 gallons of rhubarb left to bottle. I have Noiret (red french-american hybrid), pear, apple, cab sav, peach and strawberry in the bottle ready to taste! -Marc
Thanks for the input, fortunately the birds got most of the grapes this year. I am currently studying how to prune to develop the cordon.
Made it through the first year with only one death. In February I pruned the vines and tied them to their posts with the goal of a Bi lateral cordon. Added another 50 vines and plan another 50 next year if time allows Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Just for fun I am going to plant a few Kiwi's, I have never grown these, so it should be interesting. Says you need a male and female plant. Image Unavailable, Please Login
What started out as looking like a drought year ended up well with some good storms dumping up to a foot of snow in the Sierras and heavy rain at the lower elevations. The reservoirs are full and the sun is out, lots of growth in the last two weeks. This year we plan to pick grapes, if the turkeys don't get them first. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Great post. I currently live in a muslim country that allows drinking but taxes the absolute snot out of it; I don't grow my own grapes so I buy, but I do make my own wine. About 400kg of grapes for a year's worth (and giving some away). I'm a cheap bastard at heart and my $2 per bottle stuff is equivalent to the $20/bottle stuff. Still not competitive with the higher end stuff though.
Is this city water and how many gallons per day per plant? Great set-up. You need more hawks for rodent control. Might interfere with your little buddy though.

California is in drought mode Jerry Brown will fine you if you take a shower longer than five minutes, so it should be a interesting year. I plan to cut a lot of fruit off early in the year and water less. Hopefully the combo of reduced fruit and water will intensify the flavor.
Awesome thread, and that's a great project. Good luck with the drought situation, how's it going so far?
Very cool and very impressive. I know this thread is geared towards growing your own grapes. Would love to hear what you guys think about buying grape juice and starting from there. I was talking to an older gentleman recently and he was trying to explain how the wine "moved" with the moon. Really cool stuff. Yet to taste his though. Hopefully soon.
