Really? Tell me who else was running the Merc engine in 08? The answer is nobody which made McLaren the factory backed team. Red bull was the exception and that was only in 2010. From 11 on Renault pulled their factory team and just did customer engines. Brawn in 09 was unusual but again, not the norm. They made such a tremendous aero discovery that they had a huge advantage. In this day and age with the current formula there is little chance to no chance that anyone is going to win a WDC or WCC without a factory engine. Much less a Ferrari engine. Fast forward to 1:20 for Horner's thoughts on the matter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krAz1A5d9gs
Even if you disregard all those other years, RBR in 2010 was NOT 20 years ago. Factory engine? as opposed to what? They all use factory engines.
A customer engine would be like what Williams uses. These engines are likely not the same as the ones the factory team uses. In the case of a Red Bull, they are the works team, meaning that Renault favors them over their other customers. RBR in 2010 was the exception not the norm. Can you tell me how many times a team has won a WDC or WCC using a customer engine? 2009 and 2010. I don't recall any other times other than in the 70s and 80s. The days of buying an engine and winning immediately are pretty much done. Let's put it this way, do you think Ferrari really gives STR their latest, most updated engines? Of course not, the customer engines aren't the same. Do you really think Ferrari would want a customer beating them? It's been like this for years. In 93 McLaren had to make a deal to get the most updated engines from Ford because Benetton was the works team. RB is wary of using Ferrari engines because Ferrari would effectively control their power unit.
Ferrari fanatic as I am, I find it rather funny/hypocritical that they are criticising Red Bull for constantly threatening to quite F1 when they themselves have used the ploy to get what they want in the sport more times in F1 history than any other team! The saying:"Kettles and pots" springs to mind somewhat!
Uh, 2008....and brawn won 2009 with non works motors (they had to beg for motors), so the last time before this past year a true works team won was 2007.
Did we forget Ferrari threatening to leave and start their own series a few years back?? Motor sport: Ferrari threaten to quit formula one over new engine plan | Sport | The Guardian Ferrari threatens to leave F1 in 2010 - F1 news - AUTOSPORT.com Or Merc quitting?? Mercedes threatens to quit F1 BBC Sport - Formula 1: Mercedes could have quit over engines Imagine if Ferrari didn't up their game this year and performed like Mclaren? I don't follow baseball but I'm pretty sure The Cubs still win games and are competitive. Most other sports have leagues and divisions, a team performs badly they get demoted to a lower league and can become competitive again. F1 governance is broken. Stop blaming the teams for wanting to leave. Bernie is out of touch we need a new promoter and owner of F1, Jean Todt can **** off too.
However, should McLaren remove themselves from the competition, it would remain to be seen whether that would result in a existential condition whereby Formula 1 was utterly devoid of all Ronspeak. All the best, Andrew.
Already mentioned that. Huge aero advantage. Triple diffuser remember? Exception not the rule. Same in 2010. And nobody is arguing about a true works team, just about a works team or works engine is the package to have nowadays.
If they made beer, they might be a little more relaxed about it all. As it is, I think something has got them a little on edge. All the best, Andrew. Image Unavailable, Please Login
