JPM may be getting old & fat, but he was (dunno about still is) as fast as anyone "back in the day".

The guy was really, really, quick.

To answer the question; An F1 car will *smoke* any indycar IMESHO.

    Cheers,
    Ian

A racer is a racer. It's not about outright speed it's about beating the other guy.

You realize Roger Penske made him lose about 25 pounds. He's not fat anymore. As for who's faster we won't know unless they race. Pretty sure Hammy would beat him but we never really know do we?

Hamilton is younger and sharper, the quality of the opposition is much higher in F1 than in Indycar.

My money is on Montoya (on a downhill track ;)).

    -

Pretty pointless discussion. 2 Different drivers in vastly different cars. One could be a formula Ford driver, I suspect the mercedes would be an easy 5 seconds a lap faster (on Laguna) than the Indy car, the FF driver would be faster in the Mercedes still vs an experienced Montoya (or Hamilton!) in the Indy.

As crappy as the current F1 cars are, they would easily smoke an indycar at any track

Which answers the OP's question. It wasn't so much about LH vs JPM, but about the leader in each series facing off in their own cars at Laguna Seca.

    Too many variables.

Surprised to see so many dismiss the Indycars. What about them is so much slower than f1? Genuine question. Is the power to weight that much worse? Around 1500lbs w 700hp turbo v6; chassis by Dallara. The aero is still an experiment certainly, but seems to have great potential.

I'd say that in his prime, Montoya was as good as Hamilton but more agressive (this brings good and bad things)....right now i believe Hamilton would be faster, but it depends on the car....i believe that in any circuit (except ovals, if we can consider that a circuit!!!) the f.1 would smoke anything else....

This table is a pretty telling one at the Circuit Gilles Villeneueve, one of the few places
that there is a slim chance of comparing apples vs apples.

Category Driver Car Lap Record Year

Formula One Rubens Barrichello Ferrari F2004 1:13.622 2004
Champ Car Dario Franchitti Lola B2/00-Honda 1:20.238 2002
    Group C Mauro Baldi Mercedes-Benz C11 1:28.725 1990
Daytona Prototype Scott Pruett Riley Mk XX-BMW 1:32.620 2010
Grand Touring Scott Russell Chevrolet Corvette C6.R 1:39.353 2010
NASCAR Nationwide Series Alex Tagliani Chevrolet Impala 1:40.865 2012

You can throw any argument but there is a massive differences in speed - drivers
cannot make for such a big differentials. If you talking in the same car, then we
    can discuss.

Well Hamilton's pole this year was a 1:14.393 in Q3 so it's not too way off - one second
from Barichello lap's record. I'm not sure if this year's Indy cars will be as close.
