I can't speak for any other car and I hope this is my last post in this thread as I don't own that car anymore and I don't have a horse in this race. I also think threads like this take away from the joy of owning such fine automobiles. FWIW, that TR probably represents the top of the single mirror market. It is a classical certified, multiple award winning, two owner, all original example with an exceptional provenance and remarkable and complete service history since new from the same authorized Ferrari dealer. And yes, the early single mirrors and the 512m appear to be the darling of the moment in the collector market. Who knows where it will end up when the ball stops bouncing. just my .02
Congratulations Joe!! No slight intended. I am happy that you did very well with the trade in. I am just making an observation that to me the asking price is a bit insane.
Sometimes, as cars age, the earliest/purest form of a particular model finds its way to the top of the pecking order. Once a car is old enough, model run refinements and performance improvements begin to matter less than a sense of nostalgia for the original. Think Countach LP400 vs 5000 QV, 25th Anniversary, etc. This is not always the case, of course, but I believe the flying mirror cars are beginning to command a premium over the later Testarossas.
Thanks Frank, No offense taken and, of course, I respect your opinion. Personally, I always thought the testarossa market in general was very undervalued. That being said, the sudden rise in asking prices has been hard for me to recalibrate my mind to. However, the way I figure it, if an air cooled 3.2 carerra with low mileage is suddenly an $80K proposition... the Testarossa should be worth at least $300K Its good for all of us enthusiasts that the Testarossa is now valuable enough that there is no longer an economic case for deferred maintenance!
By the way, here are Hagerty's numbers for the U.S. market: the best of the best at around $135k-$140k; good, solid #2 cars around $115k; somewhat needy #3 cars at around $85k-$90k; and rats at $68k. I haven't seen any rats recently, but the others are somewhat representative of what I've seen over the past few months - at least from cars that appear to have actually sold. There are plenty of cars out there with asking prices FAR above these figures, but most of those have gone unsold for months now. Most of those sellers, of course, are active dealers who can afford to hold on to the inventory in hopes that the market catches up to them sooner rather than later. Anyway, these are only the numbers from the first quarter of this year, so they'll probably adjust upward when Hagerty publishes their second quarter figures soon. https://www.hagerty.com/valuationtools/HVT/VehicleSearch/Report?vbe=94776 Image Unavailable, Please Login
The prices continued to take off in the second quarter well into April/May in my opinion. They seem stabilized lately I think due to sheer volume of cars for sale (which I venture to unscientifically guess was an added 10-15% if you look at just auto trader and ebay).
Cheers Shamile, glad it`s of some use! All of it is just a reference that`s all - but an auction is an indication of what someone actually spent buying a particular car at a particular time and place, so I think it has some relevance to what they`re actually worth. Yes it is just generally UK and europe I tend to follow - appart from when there`s some of the bigger more well advertised ones that I try and follow in the US - just too many of them world wide lol. Still as most of the UK auctions are for LHD Testarossa`s now - and europe is obviously LHD too then most of the results shouldn`t be as far off between here and the US as it sometimes seems. The "euro spec." cars in general are going to have a bit of a premium if you live in europe/UK where you have a choice - but I would have thought in a state in the US where you have to conform to smog etc. you would expect the US spec. to be worth more. Anyway, here`s another europe auction I spotted just in time: On 4th July Monte Carlo Sun auctions have a 512 TR and 2 Testarossa`s: LHD 1992 512 TR Red/Black?, 25,000 miles, est 150-200k euros: N° de cha?ssis : ZFFLA40B000094965 Moteur : 12 cylindres a? plat oppose?s en position centrale ar LHD 1987 Testarossa Red/Black, 34,000 miles, est 140-170k euros: N° de cha?ssis : 68793 Moteur : 12 cylindres a? plat, central arrie?re longitudinal Ale?sage-cour LHD 1989 Testarossa Red/Crema, 26,000 miles, est 125-150k euros: N° de cha?ssis : 82837 Moteur : 12 cylindres a? plat, central arrie?re longitudinal Ale?sage-cour ....and just for you Joe - a McLaren MP4 12 C! Type : MP 4 12 C 2011 N° de cha?ssis : SBM11AAB7CW000335 Moteur : 8 cylindres en V a? 90°, longit p.s. your `86 looked amazing, glad you had years of fun with it and got to reap the profits too! Have fun with your McLaren - there`s an orange one that goes past our house everyday. It looks really good - though I fear it`s going to end up in a ditch the way it`s driven lol. auction house link here: Monte Carlo Sun Auctions Dom.
Exactly.....what someone actually paid...not some asking price. I guess I wasn't specific about LH. I had in mind LH in Britain as thats's not standard issue and those prices are up. Btw, I thing you were referencing Joe on his 86 and " big mac " lol I'm the flashy Lamborghini guy that also has a 91 Testarossa lol Shamile Freeze. ...Miami Vice!
Ah yeah I was lol. Yeah love ur Lambo. I'm not really a Ferrari guy myself - just a Testarossa guy! (well and 308's seem special to me too) Lambos on the other hand - I love every one upto and including the Diablo - though I did hate it for about 20 years for "replacing" the Countach lol! Dom.
Art is never "replaced" with art....it's just added to. lol Shamile Freeze. ..Miami Vice! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk
Hmm never thought of it like that, I'm ok with them now! Right where can I find 150k for an early 2wd.....no point getting a roadster in the UK with our weather. Would be better off with a submarine lol!
And I know of a deal going down right now on a very nice TR (with recent major service) for $109k. There are still some reasonably good deals out there.
The Diablo Roadster roof is a really good design. On or off in less than a minute. In Florida it can be clean skies ( palm tress swaying in the breeze ) and it can start raining with no real warning. The roof is tight doesn't leak so I thought I would let you know that. Buying a early 91-93 for 150k is pretty much gone. John T in Miami just sold his 91 for 200k ( posted in the Diablo values thread) When you say "good deals can still be had" ....and we're talking 109k,....you know this is the new normal lol Shamile Freeze. ..Miami Vice!
I'm afraid they are far, FAR off. It's just a completely different market in the U.S. right now when it comes to Testarossas. Look at the numbers from Hagerty U.S. vs Hagerty UK. Not that Hagerty's word is gospel by any means, but this is a clear indicator of the vastly different markets. Hagerty U.S.: Concours - $138,000 (£88,428) Excellent - $115,000 (£73,690) Good - $85,000 (£54,466) Fair - $68,000 (£43,573) Hagerty UK: Concours - £214,000 ($334,043) Excellent - £165,000 ($257,557) Good - £139,000 ($216,972) Fair - £98,400 ($153,597) (Hagerty's descriptions for what constitutes Conditions 1, 2, 3, and 4 are exactly the same as those for Concours, Excellent, Good, and Fair, respectively.) Yes put next to each other like that it looks pretty extreme. That's just a guide like you say but hopefully based on real sales. Still I was assuming those figures for the UK were UK RHD spec. but wasn't sure tbh. In the past RHD has been about 30-40% more but that was going by last year's auction results when there were actually RHD going through.... Bearing in mind a lot of other exotics in the US have rocketed too - the Testarossa seems an even more amazing bargain over there! Sorry Shamile I meant £150k GBP for the 2wd Diablo not $. Over here and europe they seem to be priced £120-150 GBP. Dom.
...around the same pricing then. Remember when you own a Lamborghini you get to say.... When the doors go up ( say it with me ) ......the panties go down! Shamile Freeze. ..Miami Vice! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk
hehe. Did any of you guys get a kick out of the opening scene of wolf of wall street? I don't know how easy it would be to have a girl going down on ya in the tr. I had just bought mine months before theflick came out and was pumped to see it so early in the movie. THen they cut to the girls head, LOL. Also, my dad was with me in the theater, yeah kind of wierd Clearly the should have used Shamile as a "Stunt" consultant
The TR owner here does not protest lol Oh...no problem except shifting gears lol Shamile Freeze....Miami Vice!
Just got my TR back from a major service and had a GREAT drive. I was amazed at all the Annapolis tourists checking it out and taking pics when I parked it. It truly is amazing car, even more so than my 360 (which I love dearly). I keep vacillating between selling it for the McLaren 570s or keeping it for another 20 years 😩 Sent via itty bitty electrons
