I encourage anyone who loves these cars to read this piece The Six-Second Advantage | Issue 197 | Excellence Ian Kuah puts it in perspective, not only is the 4.0 RS 5 times as rare as the CGT (in the USA, twice as rare ROW), its 6 secs faster round the Nürburgring. Simply amazing. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Timo Kluck is the man who set the fast time. There has been some confusion as to who he is because of the misspelling of his last name using a "G" (like the Formula driver). He is a Porsche Ag test driver, seen on official duty below! [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uqa8MFSXZHM[/ame]
He also set the previous fast time for the 3.8 RS [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PChDZY92UkQ[/ame]
Timo Kluck also races, seen here in the Dörr Motorsport Cup car [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9p9PBdhHgeE[/ame]
He was also one of the 3 drivers used by Porsche to set the fastest time in the 918 at the Nurburgring. Marc Leib ended up setting the ultimate time. Walter Rohl was the other driver that day too.
Okay have to dig out the photo of me running up the hill during an RS only DAY during the late 90's , a wonderful location . On the journey home I lost my original windscreen to a lump of wood ....
I'd agree the CGT would improve its time. But it wouldn't make up all of the 6 second advantage the 4.0 RS has over it, on Michelin Pilot Sport Cups, mind you. To be fair, put both cars on PSC2's and I'd say the 4.0 RS would still have the same 6 second advantage, or close. The point being the 4.0 RS is a 'mere' 911, and the CGT is a Supercar, a David vs Goliath scenario. Whichever way we look at it, the 4.0 RS is Last Action Hero when considering ultimate Porsches with a manual gearbox.

Joe, thanks a lot for starting and maintaining this thread. I discovered shortly before I got my RS last year and it's been a treat. Quick question - up until a couple of months ago it seemed that the focus of the thread was primarily the 3.8rs. You praised it for, amongst other things, its balance. I might be mistaken but I seem to remember you contrasting it to the 4.0 which you viewed as a bit of an overkill (again I may misremember). Be that as it may, there seems to be a shift in the emphasis of the thread over the last couple of months toward the 4.0rs. Is this because you think the thread hadn't given it enough attention, is it that the introduction of the new 991rs calls for a parallel with the 997 4.0rs, or simply a deeper appreciation for the 4.0rs?
That might be the ballsiest Nurburgring lap I've ever seen. He was on the limit everywhere--and most often while trail braking. Pretty amazing.
With time, Ive learned a lot about the 4.0 RS and its place in Porsche's Rennsport lineage, and I realize how special it is, and thus have come to appreciate it properly. It is the collector's Holy Grail. That said, the 3.8 RS is all-round the best RS value-for-money in the market today, no question. On balance, it has the looks of the last-of-the-series car, but is lighter and quicker than the 3.6 RS. The 3.6 RS is the beginning of the sublime 997 RS series, and for that reason it too is pretty special. I liker them all, and I say, if you have the means, you have to have them all! And I know at least a good handful of people that do. I try to stay balanced with my representation of all the GT3 RS variants, and the only car I am really guilty of not covering well is the 996 GT3 RS. The reason simply is that I find it so hard to come across new material!
Speaking of early Rennsport cars, here is an inspiring poster from back in the day that sparked the imagination of enthusiasts and established the love for the road-going RS cars Image Unavailable, Please Login
As if to immediately make amends for the lack of material, here is a nice 996 GT3 RS that appeared recently at a French meet on the Avenue Montaigne Paris, 19th June 2015 Image Unavailable, Please Login

I just returned from a 1300 mile road trip through the Ozarks with my 997.1 GT3. It was absolutely sublime. Sadly, this is the only picture from the trip..... It isn't even a good one! I would love to jump to a .2RS but that vehicle is double the value of mine. I'll just send it to sharkwerks when the motor is done. Image Unavailable, Please Login
