I have been having this going through my head for quite a while now. While Ferrari cars are amazing, full with tech, and giving us those feelings, I feel like each and every product branded with the Cavallino is a rip-off. Don't understand me wrong - they have their value, however, some / most of the products, the work associated with them are carried out by third companies. All the work for the Ferrari phone cases is done by a company, which does the same for BMW and other car manufacturers, if I am not mistaken. The base for the case is made in China, with just different leather / stitching and the Cavallino logo - and the price is 10 times higher. Also their computer case - while the nylon feels premium, it is still nylon, and it costs 190 USD!!! I mean, I haven't researched this very same case, but I can find the supplier and I bet the case will not be more than 10-15 USD tops. I must admit the build quality is pretty good tho. I'm not going to comment on the credit card holders for 170-200 USD. What shocked me the most was the price a dealer in Europe gave me for 2 luggage bags, 1 golf bag and a seat cover - 8000 (!!!!) euros. I went for it, only because it was really well-done. I was branded with 458 Spyder logo, yet I don't see how would one fit the bag into the trunk. He told me I am free to choose colors and all. I spent 30 minutes looking at colors, when I finally noticed a very nice Orange one (Mikonos), he told me that would be about 600 euros extra. I was confused - I mean the set is so and so going to be custom made, I am free to choose the color, and still I had to pay 600 euros more for each and every color. So the set was actually 8600 euros, not 8000 euros. Since I don't have 458 (Not a big fan of the looks, sorry guys), I asked him If we can remove the 458 Spyder logo and either just put Ferrari logo on it, or leave it no-branded. He told me this option will cost 300 euros. No-brainer. Since I don't even play golf and don't need the seat cover, I asked him how much would only the two travel luggage bags cost. He went behind the desk (i heard him working with the calculator) and the price I was given, with discount (that's what he said)...only 5270 EUROS! Today that equals to 5870 USD!!!! I thought that maybe a lot of people order these sets, and he is familiar with the pricing options, however, once I asked him about lead time and all, he told me he had no idea and has to call in Italy. He gave me his business card and told me to call the next day after 14:00 o'clock. Wasn't pleased when I asked him how much does that cost...I never called back. My idea is - do you guys buy some Cavallino branded things only because of who sells them, or because you are happy with the quality? Would you consider buying something which has been made from the highest quality materials possible, but do not have a certain brand on it? I'm asking that, because I have always wanted to produce something like that on my own. Ever since what I described happened, I have been researching leathers and other materials. With a lot of help from Italian friends, people who worked on exclusive Ferrari projects (including LaFerrari, 488 GTB, 599 GTO) I managed to secure myself a couple of genuine Ferrari-colored hides, and also leather and colors used in RR, Bugatti and Bentley. I know, I know, It is not a lot of work done for 6 months, but I really do not have the time. Cannot wait until I start to cut the leather by myself and work on some designs, which will be then distributed among family and friends. What was the most exciting was my visit in the plant of a leather supplier, and I got the chance to see some of the processes that the leather has to undergo. That makes me feel sorry every time I rub my leather seats. P.S.I was left with the impression, that only Poltrona Frau supplies Ferrari with leather. Wrong. Ferrari gets its leather from 3 different suppliers. Leather dashboard and / or steering wheel and leather seats mean the leather for your car comes from two different suppliers.
What is the purpose of this rant? You complain about it, then pay 8000 Euros for the product? Makes no sense.
Are many Ferrari products overpriced compared to regular products, yes. When I was Ferrari World I bought a keychain and shirt that were reasonably priced.
Isn't it the same with every car brand in the high end market? I mean, buy some bags with the name 'BMW' or 'Mercedes' on it and it's twice the price of one with 'Ford' on it (just to name one). Same with Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche or any of the high end sportscar, I think ... Nothing you can do about it I guess, as long as people wanna give this sort of money, these things are gonna get sold at this sort of money ...
You are buying the Cavallino luster and its costly. Who made them makes no difference. Is it a rip off? Yes if you buy them for just functionality, otherwise no.
Of course this stuff is a rip-off. You shouldn't need someone on Fchat to point that out to you. Therefore, if you don't like this situation, stick to buying the cars and skip the merchandise. After all, it's the cars that are the fun part, not wearing some logo on your shirt.
All quality handmade leather gear is pricey, more so if limited and branded. No surprise there. Made in China fanware is expensive as well and the quality is questionable at best. I don't buy any of this.
If people buy it and they make profit and stay in business it is not a rip off. If people do not buy it and they go out of business it is a rip off. That is how free markets work. The free market is never wrong. A rip off is also defined as when you are forced to pay under threat of violence or punishment. You know, the way the government does it.
The gen pop merchandise is a rip off. Like most licensed stuff (compare a CAR movie toy vs any other similar toy..you will see they are usually 40% more expensive for the same type of toy). The higher end goods are actually very nice quality (ex: Leather jacket, wallets etc..).
The only mechandise stuff I ever bought was a Ferrari after shave (in an official Ferrari sales stand at the OGP). This was cheaper than the after shave I usually bought, sowhat around 8,-- as I recall . It was a sale-out.
I don't think most of you guys understood me in the right way. There is nothing bad in making profit from merchandise. However, they could offer better quality / materials, and still win a lot. I just have the feeling everything is getting waaay too commercial - they know we have the money for a Ferrari or two or three, and look at us as money-****-ing individuals. BMW Merch is priced waaay below the one of Ferrari. The example I gave from what happend in Europe is just because I felt as if he was coming up with the numbers / prices in that very same second. Which was most probably the case. This very same dealer (the owner) I believe got in a scandal (around year 2002), because he drove a client's F50 "for fun". Not like 500 miles, but good 60-65 if I am not mistaken. After the client compained to Ferrari and all, a mechanic who used to work for this dealer and serviced the very same car was blamed and fired. The client was from Croatia if I am not mistaken. With that being said, I used to service my car at his dealership (my cars are located in a country where there is no official Ferrari service or partner), but changed it with one, which is closer. The mechanics are working well (at least the car is in 1 piece, so...)
Guys, you can't possibly think the F1 Team survives on just street car sales, do you? They'd charge twice as much for the swag if they thought they could get away with it. You might reconsider your stance if you LOVE the Marque AND Ferrari in F1 Racing. They are not doing a stock IPO sometime this year just for the hell of it. Food for thought.
We understood perfectly. Their entire product line, cars included are made from 2nd or 3rd rate materials. How is their line of trinkets any different? Do you really believe Ferrari, Mercedes, Porsche or Ford, or even the Hooker on the street corner look at you as anything more than a source of money? If so I suggest you are looking for love in the wrong places. They are offering a product that they have cleverly placed in the market place at a low cost with a high price and people willingly pay. Again, if it was a rip off no one will pay and they will stop. The fact remains that due to their marketing strategy for the brand people do pay and do so willingly, eagerly. You have a choice, so does everyone else.
Some of the stuff they make is better quality but yes it is overpriced, you better off waiting for a sale if you want something. You probably right that it cheapens the brand but that the mass produced throw away culture we have now. Look how many cars they've pumped out in the last 15 years, theres like 50 models including variants.
Well, I have been doing it now for 30 years, in 3 countries, with a certain degree of success if I may say so. Customers without the cash to buy that just ask and look is what I hate.
Ferrari is a very powerful brand. They will charge whatever they can for what they sell. The market dictates this and it applies to all companies. Some brands are very weak and sell goods at extreme discounts to survive. Remember that a weak brand company is still trying to get the most money they can for their goods just as Ferrari does.
No need to hate it, it's is just a inevitable fact when it comes to sales. In the case of Ferrari's, they are a very powerful draw for people. Some will go to extreme measures far beyond their means to own one. Some who can't buy today, may be able to in the future. A good sales person knows when to spend the time and effort on a serious client but always leaves everyone with a positive vibe because you just never know.
find a Puma outlet store. a lot a great Ferrari items discounted. black leather jacket was $500 new with 60% off at store yesterday.
It was said by someone at Ferrari (80s or early 90s), and I'll paraphrase, "Treat everyone who comes in the store as a potential owner."
