I recently acquired my 1978 308 GTS, and I am having issues with misfiring and backfiring after the engine has ran for a while and I shut the car off. I am looking for a knowledgeable Ferrari Mechanic in my area. I live in Michigan near Port Huron. Any reference would be appreciated.

You need someone with a deep understanding of both the ignition and webers on your car. Not for the faint hearted, and not cheap to reset, very time consuming.

Adding to what Brian S said, you want someone familiar with carbed 308's, not just anyone. They have some peculiarities relevant to the tuning done for emission reasons not found in most cars of the era.

The right person may not be real close but the right person is far more important than convenience.

This is it, I am 60 and I ask my friends some older and some younger ......
Most all of us have been searching for a good qualified mechanic all our lives ???
Finding someone for old carbed F cars may be even harder.
As mentioned post in the 308/328 section also in your "regional " area.

I work on the carb cars regularly at Ferrari of Atlanta. I have been tuning them for many years. I am finishing one now and have another on the way.

Where are you posting the pics of the car? :D

You're likely to be flatbedding the car somewhere from Port Huron.
There's Cauley Ferrari in West Bloomfield. It's bound to be right when it leaves there.
Good news, check out the Myr thread in the regional section. Perhaps he's still active and you can get in with him.
Come introduce yourself in the 308 and regional sections! And bring pics...

I would try the F chat on line bribe to Wade at FOA, pay for his plane ticket to come and visit for the weekend .... just so he can "see the sites" of Michigan.
Take him out into your garage, start your car and then drop to your knees sobbing and crying, hopefully he will have brought the tools he needs with him.
His dedication to carbed cars will make him say "I can fix that for you"
He will never know where you came up with this idea ... Promise ;)

The equipment he would potentially need is not portable. There are people all over the country capable and equipped. Impractical to bring mechanic to the car. Far better to bring the car to a mechanic and there are good choices much closer. It would be different if there was an existing relationship.

Nor owned by many so called experts.

If I could fix cars with the contents of a carry on bag I wouldn't need this shop and all the stuff in it. I wonder sometimes what makes people think otherwise.

Yes how ever could they make it work...

You have to ship it to someone Detroit is close also shops in Chicago are possibilities.

Ga is a stretch since we do have a few people here. But the guys in Michigan that used to mess with the older carb Ferrari's seems they are hard to get up With.

A little too heavy for that.

Not surprised you do but I am surprised ( I guess I really shouldn't be after all this time) about how many so called early car experts and specialists don't have one and just wing it.

They have become collector items and are very expensive these days but the good news is you can get all the parts to keep them running as a result. Sun gave up on them a long time ago.

you can still get parts from SnapOn, who now own Sun. I had an old engine analyzer I use to get parts from our tool guy.

I added the electronic ignition option myself. You have to hook up 12 volts to make that part work, but I have had no issues through 19 years of use. Knock on wood, it will run until I don't need it anymore.
The electronic option is great when converting from points to optical, it allows me to test the new box as well as the optics. It also allows me to curve 512 BBi distributors.
