Drove the 488 today.. thoughts, photos and videos

will certainly keep you posted on the F12 VS, please do likewise. if it doesn't work to, i will take the 488 since the dealer promised a good trade-up deal when the speciale version comes round. only other option is the GT3RS, but i have no allocation at the moment.

thanks for your input. well, the aventador is just too unpractically wide for me. i drove it and every trip into a garage was a nightmare. even my own one is a bit too tight for it. the beast is huge...
your remark 'don't buy what you are not convinced about' makes me certainly think....

After trying the Cali T, looking and listening to the 488, knowing the immediate future for the V12 is turbo, I am just so happy and relieved I have a VS/GTO incoming. Given my experience with these two new T cars, I have no reason to believe the V12T will be anything different and this could be the end of new F cars for me. I hope I am proven wrong.

Listening to my F40LM being wrung out testing the other day, for a turbo car, that is a magic sound, but all that noise is energy and emissions and thus considered an evil in today's world.

 

Don't know how tiny is your garage, but Aventador is not wider than Mercedes E class.
458 is narrower, but you need a huge opening to get into the car.
I'm thinking that you are also......super skinny. LOL

 

I thought V12 won't go turbo??? But don't worry if Ferrari V12 goes turbo. We still have Rolls Royce to be considered. It's fast, VERY QUIET, good interior, and has a tradizione older than Ferrari. Well, it doesn't corner very good though, but at least chance to get accident is also very low.

There is an interesting article in a recent Road & Track magazine "The Supercar Issue" (8/2015) where the article compares the 488 GTB to the 288 GTO. The comparison is based on the technological leap Ferrari has taken with regard to the turbo charged motors of the 288 and 488.

 

This really surprised me so I looked it up. The interwebs say the E-Class is 73 inches wide and the Aventador is 79.9. That really is quite a difference.

For comparison, the 458 is 76.3 inches.

It will. They are having enough issues with the LF system at present and the technology is still too infantile for their production cars, hence turbo as they have no choice as a stand alone company. Progress?

 

With mirrors, I get 81.5 inches (2071mm) for the E-Class and just over 89 inches (2265mm) for the Aventador.

Yes, you are right. It's even wider than S class. I have a W222, which is much wider than 458. If that's the case, then Peter is right, it's too wide.

 

I don't know about that either, I'm finding (with mirrors) 83.9 for the S-Class and 87.5 for the 458.

I saw the 488 in person for the first time last night at a dealer showing. The presenter stumbled over his own words trying to describe it. Not sure if he was ill prepared (given he read from a cheat sheet) or was lacking confidence in his own statements. For example he described the interior as "F-1 like", which, as an owner of a 458 rang hollow (unless the same is said of the 458). The interiors are so similar that to the uninitiated, it really looks the same (not being picky of location of knobs). I am sure there have been improvements in technology, i.e. screens, programs, etc., but visually, nothing impressive. My wife's response was someone tried "too hard" to make the car "curvy". I reserve judgment because the car was surrounded by people most of the time and I would need to see it side by side with a 458 to know if there is a big difference. What did stand out is the "gaping mouth" front end. I am not sure if this is better or worse, but I need to get used to it. The rear looks good but simply a change more than an improvement over the 458. The scoops and openings are all related to down force and air flow, but do nothing to add to aesthetics. My wife asked me if I will sell my 458 and get a 488 and I said with what I saw and heard (they provided a video with sound), I am in no hurry. Best

Bottom line, top of the food chain super cars tend to be wider. Makes sense. Would be fun to know if the designers make (hyper-cars, super cars, super sports cars) physically wider for more psychological reasons vs. real technical reasons. I recall a study done that proved in the US small car = cheap car in most peoples minds. Maybe that is true everywhere.

 

I happen to think wider cars tend to age very well over time.

 

Drove my brother's BMW 135is convertible yesterday. Car is turbo with dual clutch transmission but the turbo noise at different rpm is extremely annoying and intrusive. Is this what a 488 GTS is going to sort of sound like with the turbos!

ummmmmm pagani huarya is a v12 twin turbo. So that theory is thrown out the window lol

 

And so is the Merc V12's. And I believe Aston is going twin turbo V12 as well now.

Not sure exactly what Zaius means by "undrivable". Zaius, can you fill us in on that?

This is Luca's car. The time it takes to get a car from drawing board to showroom means most of the major elements of this car, both style and mechanical, would have been finalised under Luca, including the decision to go turbo which would have been made at the outset. It's likely that it was mostly testing, developing and fettling that happened under Luca's successor.

Are you seriously offering a RR as an alternative to an FCar or is that a joke?

 

Most definitely a Luca car. This car was planned and developed long before Luca stepped down. My guess is that most testing and development had been wrapped up by that time. Sergio has been much more involved with the launch of the car, than designing, building and testing it.
I think we have to get to the FF-M or F12-M before we have an actual Sergio car. These machines takes a long time to design and develop, my guess is that the 488 replacement is starting to take shape somewhere on a computer.

 

Everybody wants to become Porsche now. Mclaren has started with the 570 and 540, targeting Porsche 911. Lamborghini takes out SUV targeting Cayenne.
IMO, if Ferrari wants to produce Porsche's level cars, they should release new model, lower range with turbocharged engines and platforms being shared. But don't mess with things that work. Taking the sound away from a model that being famous for it's sound, is a Russian roulette.
