    Guys,

I have discovered much to my dismay that my turn signal stalk doesn't click back to the middle position after I complete a turn. In fact, the little turn signal indicator light is so faint that I can barely see it on a sunny day.

So I wind up being the jack off who is driving around with a turn signal on.

My gut is telling me that somewhere along the line the turn signal cancellation ring must have gotten removed from the back of the steering wheel hub.

I just want to know if your turn signal stalks return to the center position when your steering wheels straighten out?

Also is there a part # for a turn signal cancellation ring?

    Thanks to all.

    Rob

Yes, mine cancels. '79 GTS. If you have removed your cats you can use your slowdown lights as turnsignal indicators, much easier to see.

It did at one time ;)

See page 22 in your 248/82 OM: "Direction indicators control lever B (automatically trips back to central position)..."

The canceling ring is in the turn signal switch. It is rather fragile. Verrell reproduces the canceling ring, so there is a source. That is a far less expensive alternative than trying to find a good used turn signal switch. Search for Unobtainium Supply to find Verrell.

Substituting led bulbs for the regular bulbs will allow you to easily see your blinker indicator lights in the speedo even in bright daylight.

I'll attach a photo of the turnsignal switch for you. The cancelling ring is where the horn contact plate is located. You'll see two posts sticking up from the cancelling ring. Near the posts on each side the plastic is quite thin, so this probably your problem area.

If you look closely at this photo, you'll see that one post has been repaired.

    Good luck, Jeff

Very helpful pic jeff. Thank you!

Looks like I will be in the hunt for either a replacement turn signal switch or just the cancellation ring. Hard to tell from the photo how the ring detaches from the assembly.

I bought the car with 15K documented miles on it. I find it hard to believe that it would have been removed.

Broken? The printed statement in your 248/82 OM seems clear (and it's been a standard thing on all cars for a long, long time).

To be honest I found it odd that there was no cancel. What are the odds of both turn signal cancels being broken on a car with 15K?

move to the Ballard area of Seattle; you'll fit right in.
BTW, my '79 GTS left turn cancels about half the time; the right turn always cancels

The ring operates both left and right canceling and it can easily break in two areas. It doesn't matter how many miles, just a little bad luck and there you go!

If you refer to the picture I posted above you can see the thin part of the ring at the lower area. The small nubs in that thin area is where the cancellation occurs (in the weakest areas of course!

It would appear that failure can just as easily be a function or time as use. This plastic nub will not go down as the engineering high water mark for Ferrari in the late '70's!!!

The failure is due to happen when engaging turn signal with steering wheel angle at the "cancellation point", then the infamous Vitaloni plastic parts in stalk assemby conflicts and may snap.
This typically happens when exiting a roundabout.
