    Guns are for idiots.

Thank God the ones me and my mates played with as kids came from K-Mart and were plastic.
Otherwise I probably would have shot my brother. Several times.

I think you should be able to have a gun. I totally understand that philosophy.

Having said that, I'm not so sure this child's mother is feeling like that at the moment.

A sad and tragic accident that makes no sense to us in this country. That just wouldn't happen here and we are much better for it.

The same old mish-mash. Here's what I wrote 2 yrs ago on the same topic:
    BLOODY HELL!

I've just skipped through this thread and am sad to say that I'm not surprised by the irrational and frenzied defence from the pro gunnners, and the irrational and personal attacks from the anti-gunners.

The fact it that most homicides (in Australia, but would apply to the US too, perhaps) are from husbands killing wives and wives killing husbands. So making that easier (like having a handgun in the house) is a bad idea - removing guns from the home wouldn't eliminate this, but would lessen it - it's more effort to kill someone with a pointed stick than by moving your finger on a trigger 2mm.

Road rage is an increasing problem everywhere - I had a serious incident myself a few years ago where the other driver ran me off the road and got out of his car - he was built like a tow truck and could have killed me if I got out - perhaps if I had a hand gun I would have been bold enough to confront him, and let me tell you, I was VERY upset (because I was in the right, of course) and may have had a brain explosion and shot him (and now be in jail). Guns make stupid irrational decisions permanent.

I'm only talking about law abiding citizens here, not criminals. Criminals can always get guns, but if there are less of them around, it's that little bit harder.

And before you pigeon hole me here, let me say that I was 7 years in the military, a marksman, a small arms coach, and on the shooting team. I had a nice collection of military firearms, and was a member of 2 rifle clubs and a pistol club as a civilian. My collection was lost in the 1996 gun buy back scheme, and I was not happy, but guess what? My life hasn't changed.

Yeah, like I said - mish-mash. Talk to Mark Twain about stats. You can't argue with a guy about his religion, and the fact that some US guys are actively looking in this part of the forum tells me that they're looking for an excuse to be outraged. This will go on infinitum - like talking to a Collingwood supporter

That's why most mass shootings happen in guy free zones...

Damn criminals are not following the law...

Umm no... but maybe more "guy" free zones WOULD bring the mass shooting numbers down.

Yep, only 620,000 died in the American Civil War.

There probably isn't a solution which fixes everything. For every example, there is a counter example. Either way, human nature stands in the way.

It's easy to see where the American standpoint comes from (if indeed it started by British and, earlier, religious oppression) and their ongoing distrust of politicians and political processes (even the senator in that video cited this as a factor).

I just wonder if the originators of the American Constitution realised the ramifications of what they wrote a few hundred years ago on the people's right to bear arms.

There's a definitely culture of fear within the US. Though they call it "being prepared".

I met a few of these "prepared" nut cases while in the defense force, these nutters had an arsenal large enough to hold off a small army, ..... unfortunately for them they have LOTS of LARGE armies to contend with inside their own borders

I don't understand why anyone who lives in Australia thinks that their opinion on US gun control is relevant or worthwhile.

It's their country, a democracy and if a majority wanted different laws, they would happen.

We'd be justifiably p'd off if an American posted opinions on our laws and of course there is no shortage of illegal guns in the hands of criminals here.

What's your point? We're still allowed our opinion, right?
