No idea how this happened. A simple alternator repair turned into a broken tensioner housing. Following a post on here, it said to turn the bolt counter clockwise. Well, I turned it about 5 turns and it blew its guts out.

How difficult are these to swap out?

Did you loosen the locking nut first?

I loosened the nut on the pulley. Is that what you mean?

    The pulley never moved.

Yep. What I meant. Can't diagnose from a distance but my guess would be that some how the tensioner mechanism was frozen up, not allowing the idler to move. Take it all off. Get it welded or replace.

WOW! Ricambi wants $400 for a new one. Euro spares has a used one for $115.

Be sure and save the old one, or offer it up here. That's an easy fix for a competent welder so no reason to toss the old part.

Uh yeah, I just removed the nuts and realized the studs need to be removed. Is there a right way to do this?

Totally sucks to do with the gas tank not removed. I removed the studs & destroyed the threads while removing them. I bought new studs & used double nut method to put them back in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qYKMtb3Jpo
Maybe the double nut method could work for taking them out. Just so little room to work with.

Yeah, that top one was a sob. How did you remove your studs? I don't even think I could get vise grips on that top one.

If you remove the pulley you may be able to get it out without removing studs
I've been lucky enough to do it that way
