Haven't heard a thing. Certainly nothing about it in the yellow press. Lets just hope that ultimately the cars are repatriated. It's a sorry story.
I am unsure of the vehicle registration requirements in other states, however in Victoria, a registration certificate does not imply title. The relevant fine print appears at the top right of each Victorian registration certificate, see image below. Note, the same appears on Club Permit Scheme documentation. If a vehicle is purchased in Victoria from a L.M.C.T (Licensed Motor Car Trader) then the title is guaranteed by the trader. (Not sure what happens if there's a dispute and they become insolvent). However a private purchase can be risky. Assuming you have done your due diligence and checked to see if the vehicle is listed on the stolen/repairable write off register and is free of all encumbrances, the vehicle you purchase may not be the seller's. Oddly, the seller doesn't have to prove title to the vehicle of which they are disposing. They just have to complete the transfer documents and either the seller or buyer must supply a R.W.C. (Road Worthiness Certificate) and it can be transferred into the buyers name. On a high value vehicle, as is the case with the vehicles in this thread, it would be very easy to produce a forged letter of authority giving you the right to act on behalf of the "Owner" in selling a vehicle. Whom may not even be the owner, just the person named on the registration or permit documentation. Image Unavailable, Please Login
If the dealer becomes insovent , I would say that the dealers' governing body would guarantee title or that the real owner would not be entiled to regain title to their vehicle , only monetary compensation from the governing body or state govt???
Does anyone know why the REVs check asks if the vehicle is pre or post 1989 ? Are there accurate records of stolen and repairable vehicles that were last registered before 1989 available via the REVs database or is there some other way of finding out the past history of these long lost cars ? I am aware of several interesting cars that might be for sale but the "owner" has no supporting documentation that verifies clear title to their ownership.
REVS replaced by PPSR in January 2012. The National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System (NEVDIS) is responsible for maintaining a database that registers every vehicle's VIN across the country. A key task of NEVDIS is to decode and upload new VINs as vehicles are manufactured or imported into Australia so that the vehicle can be registered with the relevant State or Territory. When you import a vehicle, the VIN that is recorded on your Vehicle Import Approval is sent to the NEVDIS Administration Unit (NAU) so that they can validate, decode and upload it for registration purposes. It should be noted that NEVDIS only records VINs for vehicles built on or after 1 January 1989.
