Oh cool thanks! Man you're good. I had seen an older Datsun roadster parked at that same spot before and wasn't sure if there was some sort of a connection between the two cars.

The Datsun was either a 1600 or 2000... a close look reveals that they modeled the styling from the MGB, which itself was modeled from one of the Renaults. Fairly comon when new. Rusted quickly. I think 'Datsun' was only used in the US... were 'Nissan everywhere else.

Anyone our age would know the Sunbeam Alpine. Very popular, and fairly common. They put in Ford V8's to sort of compete with Shelby's Cobra... voila' the Sunbeam Tiger.

Datsun name was used in Europe too, and on other export markets as well.

And it's an urban myth that it was styled as a MGB lookalike, as it actually debuted a few months before MGB.

Didn't know about the 'Datsun' name... you are correct.

But, I think you are wrong about the MGB/1600 Roadster dates.

I remember the MGB being out several years before the Datsun 1600, at least in the US.

Wiki says MGB debuted in '62, the Datsun 1600 not until '65.

Also, the MGB looks suspiciously like the earlier Renault Caravelle... heard that for years... copied.

Indeed it came to market in USA much later - but it debuted at Tokyo salon back in 1961., before the MGB was launched. :) It took them some time to start exporting them and that's what created the confusion.

As for resemblance to Renault Floride/Caravelle, I don't see much of it (I'd go for Pinin Farina's 1959. Fiat 1200 Cabriolet as the more obvious source of the inspiration) but for sure neither of those cars was a real design breakthrough and I'd say that all were more or less in general styling mood of the times.

Does anyone know what this is? A friend of mine liked it, wants to identify it, and I don't know very much at all about this genre of car.

Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of the front of it. The duck tail reminded me a little of a second generation Pontiac Firebird, but I don't know if that's right. Help? :)

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Looks to be a genuine second generation Mazda RX7. I much preferred my first generation 1980 version.

I'd give a further account, but that red thing in front is cutting off some of the view. ;)
