    Guys,

I wanted to remove my steering wheel to see if I am missing a turn signal cancellation ring.

I popped out the horn button and expected to see a large hex nut holding the wheel onto the spline. Instead there was this round round retaining nut with grooves cut into it every 90 degrees. You can see in the attached pic if you look really close.

Is there a special tool that I need in order to remove this nut?

    Thanks to all!

And yes the cancelling ring sometimes breaks. Not sure if original parts are available but I think Verell was making them.

Just to clarify. The steering wheel comes off by removing the hex screws. The steering wheel hub is removed with the above mentioned tool but you will need a puller to get it off without damaging anything. At least in my experience.

Got it. I've got a steering wheel pulling tool. It sounds like I need to get at my turn signal switch as that is where the cancellation ring resides.

It was never available as an individual part, just part of a complete column switch.

Yes, I make them to order. Prices are:

Ring, Turn cancel black body switch w/o brass horn commutator ring & contact wire: $ 47.00

Transfer brass horn commutator ring & horn contact wire from your old turn cancel ring: $75.00

The ring nut is also known as a SKF nut. It was originally developed as a low profile nut that would retain the inner race of a bearing on a shaft end w/o protruding into the seal area & w/o requiring a lock washer.

As to why it was used on the steering column, good question the older cars used a low profile nylock style hex nut there.
