Some of the black lettering has worn off on the metal caps in the engine. What do I use to restore the black lettering?

So what do I do- use a tiny paintbrush and try to freehand it? Or blob it on and wipe off excess with something

Im assuming this is embossed lettering that you are painting in the embossed area?

personally I use the end of a toothpick or dental pick and dot it on using small amounts of paint and go slow

I have used an Elmer's Painters pin paint tube that is in the Walmart crafts section. It comes with a fine, medium, or large tip. You buy the tip size you want, like an ink pen.

It is about the size of a Magic Marker or Sharpee.

You push down on the tip and it releases some paint onto to the tip.

I have used black and white paint for different emblems, gas caps, etc.

You may have to rub the excess paint off if you get too much paint on whatever you're painting.

The fine tip worked best for me for really small lettering.

    Best regards,
    Jerry

Ok so i followed the above posters advice and went to my local grocery store and bought a paint pen for $3. First I cleaned everything with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry. You need the fine tip but even that is just a hair too wide. The paint wipes right up with a paper towel so you need paint the lettering and wipe away the excess. Repeat several times until you have the desired results! Takes 10 minutes and the black matches perfectly! Here are some pictures: before, during and final end result!

Now Shoot it with a coat of Clear Coat or a coating like Optimum Gloss Coat to protect it for the long haul.

    Nice result.

I use all of the Optimum products also: Hyper polish, Opti Seal, and their Spray on Wax as well as the NoRinse car wash / detailer. Do I need to remove all the wax etc from the car with isopropyl and water and then apply the Gloss Coat? Have you used it on your ferrari? thanks!

I have used Gloss Coat but not on a Ferrari, I don't own one yet. :(

I used it on my son's Subaru that I want to stay looking great even if he is not gentle with it. I purchased the car new in July of 2012 and Applied Opti Coat 2.0. In May of 2015 I polished the car and applied Gloss Coat. The stuff protects well, and wears like Iron.

For future reference. Just go to the hobby shop get a small vial of your paint color of choice (oil base). Slather it into the recessed letters. Let it sit for a few seconds and then quickly swipe across the lettering with a paper shop towel soaked in paint thinner. Have the paper towel tight to your finger so it rides across the surface. The paint thinner obviously removes the excess paint, but also collects a little in the lettering and fresh paint and self levels the new paint.
