    Hi everyone,
First post on here and am glad to be a part of this community. I currently own a 1997 355 Spyder with a 6 Speed manual and love it. Currently looking at purchasing a 1999-2004 360 Modena or Spyder with the F1 transmission. Driven a few cars with paddle shift transmissions in the past but would love to own a 360 with this transmission. I've heard numerous statements from various sources and people that when using reverse with the F1 transmission in the 360s that this can lead to extremely fast clutch wear and that you can destroy the clutch pretty quick. I know the clutch is operated by some sort of hydraulic system but what is the deal with the clutch wear? Can someone please explain what exactly would cause the clutch of an F1 transmission to be this badly damaged by going in reverse? And how exactly would you go about going in reverse if this is the case. Thanks everyone.

From what I have read the following can lead to premature clutch wear

    1. Reversing up inclines.
    2. Stop and go traffic where you only creep ahead a bit at a time (car is slipping the clutch).
    3. driving in auto mode solely (Debateable I suppose).

I try and practice the following when driving to help clutch life.

    1. Drive more in Sport than Race (not sure if it helps or not).
    2. Drive it like a true standard which means at every stop light I shift to neutral.
    3. Reverse out of my garage or parking spots only (slow speed).
    4. no launching of any kind.
    5. In traffic I leave enough space in front so I can accelerate hard enough to let the clutch fully engage and disengage. Try not to idle forward which heats up the clutch.

Reverse damages the clutch because R is a very tall gear. As a result, the clutch never fully engages when in R (or doesn't in most cases because you aren't going fast enough).

As a result of what posted above, we all suggest you to put neutral, go out and push the car yourself backwards.

Better yet, don't ever drive the car, just push it. Can never be too careful!

Based on the other recent thread, you can't park it anywhere either. I'd advise you just use the car as garage decor.

On days I want to save the clutch, i just put it on my flatbed truck and have my driver drive me around while I sit in the 360 and enjoy the ride!

I don't believe Dave pushes his car. I want proof.

Dave, next to you drive ... I mean push, your car, have your wife take a cell phone photo of you and post it.
