A left-hand drive "world speed record" 550 has just been sold at auction for £179,000 here in the UK – even with sterling somewhat weakened against the dollar, this is $268,000!

These 550 World speed records are rarer than 550 barchettas and 575 superamericas which are trading at double this auction price. Wise buy!

Don't understand the issue of the world speed 550's. Hope, you can explain me the background regarding their value (despite the fact, that there has been a limited production on this model)....

According to my knowledge, we are taking about a standard 550 equipped with some nice sportive accessories (which could be ordered as well with any other new 550). There are, as far as I know, no specific extras which make this car unique (despite the WSR plate), no chassis modifications, no engine or transmission updates, not even the colour is unique but the most sold one.

Strangely, the colour which I spotted on the original WSR car has been grigio titanium, why most of the WSR cars are red?

To compare this cars with the open 550/575 versions is imho difficult. We are talking about very rare open V12 engined cars, as the past shows, in most of the cases they reach several times the price of the equal coupe, let's see an original Daytona Spider compared to the Coupe or the 250 California Spiders to the average 250 Coupes.

    Saluti,

Jürgen, you are in my view 100% correct here.

The market, though, can be weird, as we all know..I get a vibe from dealers that WSRs are the ones to have, while like you I am still keen to know just why.

But sometimes, the ones to have are the ones to have because they are...the ones to have.

It's a bit like fashion, a world with which I am infinitely comfortable but which is still weird.

Sorry, Ferrari-tech gurus for comparing your world to fashion. But it's true..(and Fabios exhausts could be fashion items!)

But as you rightly say no comparison with the open cars. That's something else

I am guessing Slippy is the proud owner of a WSR?

I understand that a red 550 WSR (LH) sold in Britain this spring for 186,000 GBP. Now, a comparable example is being offered at auction in November.

Does anyone reading this -know- an owner of a 550 WSR?

It appears to me that the 33 WSR examples are being viewed as six figure bargains by collectors; now driving up pricing on subsequent available models (just as the 39 examples of GTO250 went up in the 1970's, year-over-year). Based on this auction's mid-point estimate of 245,000 GBP, last spring's sold car is now "worth" another $90,000...in six months.

These are "sleepers". No listing of 550's breaks them out as a separate pricing category.

While you can make a WSR, FHP or HGTC car all car so equipped from Ferrari command higher prices. That is just the way it is. There is a smaller market of those who would want a homebrew even if with today's technology a homebrew WSR could be a very superior car to an original WSR.

Everyone photo I've seen has a suede covered steering wheel, but I guess the proper term is "Alcantara" :)
