These rules would be impossible to enforce; how can you prove that a team is "giving up" ?

In the case of Honda, they don't seem to be sandbaging to get a better shot next year, do they?

In any case, it's the rules that are wrong, not McLaren's interpretation of them.

Why not just update the motor to your hearts content and pay the fines...who cares about the tokens, makes me wonder...

The other teams have done the job properly so they avoid getting penalties.

McLaren/Honda have not done the job properly and so they get penalties.

However, under the new regulations, they can accumulate 50 grid place penalties for each driver but only have to go back 2~5 places on the grid - That cannot be right because they are not receiving the full punishment for failing to do the job properly!

Yes, because they have completely failed to build a power unit that meets the requirements of the regulations in terms of reliability when every other team has pretty much managed to meet the regulations.

If they finish 5 laps down then that's their tough luck for doing such a bad job in the first place!

As I say, if you accumulate penalties then they should penalise you for your failures, and the more penalties you accumulate, the more you should be penalised!

This weekend McLaren have accumulated a total of 105 grid place penalties and yet they are only having to go back @ 5 grid places per driver, so 95 penalties are now being ignored.

That means that each of McLaren's drivers are in reality receiving the exact same penalty as Kimi is for his single infringement of the rules - Again I ask: How can that be right?

Why should McLaren/Honda be exempt from having to pay the full price for doing such a p:censored:ss poor job? - Because they are lagging behind now? Whose fault is that?

Reading some of the posts in this thread, I'm surprised there isn't a call on here to allow McLaren to start the race with a half race distance head start over the others due to the fact that they're lagging behind in the technical race!

Since Honda hasn't sorted its power unit, McLaren is already severely handicaped, and doesn't need to be further penalised to the point where its participation may be ending. The FIA understood that, the other engine manufacturers too, but you don't!

Most judges understand that penalties can be served concurrently and not consecutively.
What is the point of dishing out 50 grid place penalties when only 20 cars are on the grid?

Nobody denies that the Honda engine isn't up to scratch and McLaren is in deep trouble until it is sorted, but according to you, they should be treated like common law criminals because of it!

    What's your agenda, for christsake?
It's a sport after all, it's not world war!!

In the media pen after the GP, Button was saying he's not enjoying F1 due to their terrible pace. Said he was basically just driving around in circles during the race. Never seen the guy so down-in-the-mouth.
And Alonso mentioned that he was talking to a Merc engineer... but only to see about hooking him up with some Honda power boat motors.

At least Fred is looking forward to his next career: Honda salesman.

    Agreed.

But I suspect that journalists are hovering over the McLaren pit and provoking any answer.

Eric Boullier should have been told to wind his neck in and say nothing.

    Ah, what lovely context...

    Manor:
"...This, together with the strategic calls from the pit wall, enabled us to keep in touch with the McLarens..."
