When I got my dizzy back from Don King he also sent me a old distributor cap that was cut away. I had to put the cap on the non-pertronix dizzy and align the rotor to the marks on the cap. I sent it back after I did the alignment and made marks on my dizzy so I could realign it in the future.

Something like this? I made one from a cracked distr cap in storm trooper fashion. Used it several times. Of course in Bianco, same as my car.

Thanks again everyone for all the good info here.

I looked on ebay for a cap to cut open and holy smokes are they expensive. Option 1: If there is someone here that wants to part with an old non-functioning cap for a reasonable price, please PM me. Option 2: What if I put the engine at TDC and measure the continuity between the coil lead and #1 spark lead and mark the region the rotor is in contact. Then set the slave dizzy at the half way point? Does anyone think that would work? Remember, my master is on 5_8.

    Thanks,
    Paul

Don lost the cap years ago. He sent it out and it never came back.

Measuring continuity would probably work. Just roll the crank over to do the other side at PM 1_4.

I just eyeballed it and back checked everything with the timing light.

Is this what being one spline off looks like? One dizzy was on the lead side, one on the lag side. Yuk. Oh well, the car came to me with no history on rotor or cap replacement so maybe it was just due anyway.

I wonder back in the 70s what was the expected life on these parts anyway?

New update - I just came to visit the workshop and everything works fine now after I shared the TDC info with the mechanic . He told me that all he has to do was to set the timing higher and everything works ! 👍🏻

After all the thoughts in this thread i got back to work on my car. I put the Pertronix in my years ago but after that ran into fuel issues. Sorted that out then found issues with the carb linkages. Finally sorted that out but have had issues since then with erratic spark on the rear bank. It seemed like it was worst on cylinder #1 with VERY erratic to almost nonexistent spark. Its been driving me nuts as I needed it to idle properly before getting on with synching the carbs again.

I had put new caps and wires on when I did the pertronix so I tried switching back to the old caps, tried a different set of wires, tried swapping everything from aide to side...well almost everything. And I have checked to make aure I had aligned the distributors properly when I started this whole mess MANY times.

I was going back through things this evening, taking the cap back off for the thousandth time and re-checking that I had it all set up properly at TDC. Then I think i found the problem when I noticed this......

And you know I really have no idea or excuse as to why I didnt replace the rotors when I did everything else. Shoulda spent the silly $50 more in the first place. New rotors on the way then hopefully I can get on with synching the carbs and have mine back on the road after way too long.

Your going to love it when you get the new rotors. I put on new caps, rotors and wires and the motor purrs like never before. I should have done that long ago.
