I "get" the whole tribute car thing. I would love to build a 288 GTO tribute some day that I could thrash and not worry about valuation. Mainly because the 288 GTO to me is the most beautiful Ferrari ever made. Muscular and curvy at the same time. But at current values it's way outside my pocket book. The main thing is that I would never try to market a 288 GTO tribute car as the real thing. In fact, I would not put any badges whatsoever on it. It wouldn't matter to me if the car was identical down to the last nut and bolt to a real one, I still wouldn't call it a 288 GTO.
Update as of today's data input. So far, I have verified 188 different F355 Challenge Car serials that raced in the series - worldwide. I will continue to add more information as it comes available and more drivers are linked to cars. Hopefully all done by Christmas for the Compendium. Robb
You have to account for all the cars that were wrecked then all the challenge parts were swapped over to berlinettas then raced again. Recycled parts for new
Great information! Any luck getting information on in-house factory built cars? How many produced? What was the process like? Did they have a section of the factory that had its own unique limited assembly line?
Spent some time on the phone with Robb tonight and we were going over some challenge car info and while doing so, Robb found that there was a second driver for my car in 1999 and he took it to the world championships in Italy...... This is amazing. Robb Is becoming a walking encyclopedia on the 355C. Thanks again Robb PS any one of you that finds info or sees a 355Challenge car, get the info on it to Robb. Everyone of these cars that is researched for its history opens more doors on more info for other 355 Challenge cars.
Hi Rob I am trying to do some research on s/n 104800.if you have it in your database would be great to know. Thanks for a great thread. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Looks like your right on the money based on last weekend's auction result of a non-street legal 99 355 Ch sale.
Robb, Looking forward to see the result of your research. Confirming the 355CH that raced in the series is one thing. There are some cars that never raced at all and also some that raced but in other series. Mine (104670) raced in the GT4 French championship alongside 911 GT2 & GT3). Could trace a class win in 1997 against 964 carrera rs. The car has been lightened further and has non active suspension (i guess required by the GT regs). I wonder how many raced in the regular championships against other marques ?
It is definitely a fun process. All of the cars are special in their own ways with good stories to tell. No doubt that F355 that raced at higher levels of competition against Porsche etc are highly valued and sought after. Documentation will always be key. I'll try to have a section of cars in other racing series as a notable extra in the compendium. Robb
