Dodge using Ferrari Designed Engines

I came across this article worth sharing. Obviously, FCA is looking to maximize investments where ever possible. We even saw news that Ferrari is going to modular manufacturing within it's own line up. One tidbit that came out recently is that Chrysler / Dodge seems to be killing off the Hemi. It is reported they are taking the Ferrari designed Giulia V6TT powerplant and sending the platform stateside - straight to Detroit!

Yet another example of Sergio, the FCA accountant in chief, to delude the Ferrari brand while trying to make a buck in America.

 

Dilution is going to destroy Ferrari if he's not careful, guy has no clue about heritage and isn't fit to be given the keys to enzo's office

I love Hemis for the sheer power and torque, but they are not refined.
Harley took a leap forward when they asked Porsche to design for them.

 

Sergio, for all his talent, is unqualified to run Ferrari.

Ferrari has been using dodge parts in the California since it came out. Why cant dodge use Ferrari parts?

How does it feel to jump into a 250k car and find a caravan radio/nav unit? Even the headlight switch is out of a ram pick-up..

 

You say this like it's a good thing. The Chrysler Infortaiment screen from a Jeep is a embarrassment in the $200+ grand CA.

 

Definatly not a good thing at all. Just drawing a parallel. Expect to see more caravan parts in over priced Ferrari in the future. But people will still line up to buy them.

 

I know some/most/many American's think Chrysler invented the hemi(spherical) engine but they didn't. The Guilia V6TT engine will be a modern version of a hemi combustion chambered engine. I think the correct term is pent roof.

So as far as I am concerned they could still label them "Hemi" ... if they wanted to. I guess though some/most/many American's think hemi has something to do with the v8 configuration??

ps: And yes Mr Sweater will make money but at a long term cost to the Ferrari brand. Thankfully I don't have much interest in modern appliances and prefer older more soulful cars.

To be honest I don't see this as a big deal. Lancia used the Ferrari V8 in the Thema 8.32 back in the 80s when Enzo was still alive and Maserati have been using Ferrari designed engines for ages.

I would be much more upset if Ferrari started using Dodge based engines as even the Fiat built Dino engine was a Ferrari design.

 

Big difference between Italian Lancia and Maserati and Dodge, which sorry to most, is down the bottom of the automotive scale.

Next Ferrari engines will end up in Chinese cars ...

With Ferrari going public, expect the share holders not to care on bit about Ferrari. They will just want to see the money.

The Chrysler fiat group will no doubt force Ferrari to up production and share parts with the parent companies. Obviously costs would come down, and profits will go up. And that's the point. Money rules the day haritage doesn't pay the bills.

 

Ferrari by design / engineering, not manufactured from same material or level of quality as would be installed in a Ferrari badged car ( hopefully )... Porsche design and engineering has been doing this for years

2015 Porsche installs a high dollar Bose as one of the options, yet a Ford Focus offers a more fully featured sound/info system at a fraction of the cost... seems a high end car manufacturer would be more aware of what is being installed vs being behind what is being offered in the market place. Bose and others should be shipping the latest and most fully featured product to the manufacturers of premium level cars to showcase their product, instead of using the next PO to dump their now out of date product. It reflects poorly on the both the car and electronics mfg

The article says Giulia V6TT, which is Alfa not Ferrari, and there is no where mentioned that it will be marketed as "Ferrari".
So they designed an engine for an Alfa that MIGHT get used in a Dodge, and this deludes(sic) the Ferrari brands how exactly?

Because what Sergio wants to do (and in fact is doing) is creating a "shared platform" system where more and more Chrysler cars will use Alfa, Maserati and Ferrari parts and engines and be marketed as such.

This Alfa engine "engineered by Ferrari" or "derived from Ferrari" is going into a Dodge, Maserati, and Alfa cars and and already being pimped that way

It deludes the brand because Ferrari becomes less special, less unique, less purposeful in design and engineering.

Every time you do a shared platform or engine, you compromise it so that it can be used many ways, not just "the best way".

Luckily Sergio retires in 2 years. Until then he's going to do whatever he can to make sure the Chrysler deal wasn't an economic disaster, spoiling his big check at the end.

 

So are the old Ferrari Dino engines compromised due to being found in the FIAT Dino's?

Was the Dino engine compromised due to being used in the Lancia Stratos?

Was Ferrari's image severely damaged due to the Dino engine that was fitted to FIAT 130 range?

Was Ferrari's reputation destroyed when they ran Lancia's D50 in F1 or when they eventually fitted their own engine to the D50?

How about when the Lancia LC2 race car came along with it's Ferrari engine?

Did the Lancia Thema 8.32 cause any reputation issues for Ferrari? (And wasn't this "Ferrari" engine actually assembled by Ducati and not Ferrari?)

How about when Ferrari fitted their engine into a chassis and tub that they never even made but still put their badge on the car: The 333SP? - Did that damage Ferrari's reputaion?

Has Ferrari's reputation been damaged because they make engines for Maserati these days? Has that suddenly made Ferrari less special to World? - I'd suggest it hasn't TBH!

Ferrari have been doing this kind of engine sharing/building for decades and it hasn't caused any issues whatsoever for the company, and I seriously doubt it will suddenly start to cause an issue now.

As for the quality of Chrysler and Dodge products, is it any different to Lancia's reputation when Ferrari helped create the Thema 8.32 or FIAT's reputation when the 130 came out?

In the respective times of the Thema and 130, neither Lancia or FIAT were noted as being top end quality cars any more, they were now playing second fiddle to the likes of Mercedes and BMW. Both Lancia and FIAT had become "also rans" rather than class leaders, but that didn't stop Ferrari being linked to them, and that link didn't do the company any harm.

TBH, I think you're worry about nothing here. I can't see Ferrari going down the toilet after all these years because an Alfa Romeo, Chrysler or Dodge has a Ferrari based/engineered/built engine fitted to it!

And for all you know right now, they might just come up with a car that is a fantastic bit of kit.

Maserati have managed to do it with Ferrari engines so there's no reason why Alfa Romeo, Chrysler or Dodge couldn't.

 

If memory serves, the Harley / Porsche partnership pre-dates the V-Rod. They may have done some work on the VR-1000.
