On the topic of aftermarket exhausts: I also have a twin turbo M4 which suffers from similar lousy sound issues. The aftermarket exhausts for M cars, while helping the sound, still cannot really change the fundamental sound characteristics of a turbo engine. I've basically given up with trying to improve the M4's sound, other then locking the exhaust vales open which at least makes a bit more sound at ideal and low revs. I think this is going to be similar for the 488 and we are all just going to have to get used to it (or not)

I agree. The sound on the 488 sounds pretty good in my opinion. Im sure in person its better. The 458 in my opinion won't be as easily forgotton as you say in my opinion. I think it will stey popular, with it being the last N/A v8 Ferrari ever makes and with it being one of the best Ferraris ever made overall.

Completely disagree with what you said, i had a chance of buying a 488 gtb since iwas given a slot and the dealer had a couple of 458 speciale available for purchase as well and i went for the speciale even though its more expensive. Would rather buy 650s then the new 488. I see Ferrari copying Mac for the first time (Others lead we follow)

I agree Faster is not necessarily better as if it was just speed one wanted you could get a tuned GTR for far less cash. I agree -- I loved my F430 Spider (I know many did not love the looks of the 430). Despite the "rawness" of it compared to the 458. I disliked how the F1 transmission would kind of sputter in low speeds (especially down an incline) and little things on fit and finish that weren't great. While many knocked the dual clutch when it first came out, it is really a paradigm shift and all performance cars have moved to them (the PDK in my 911 is unreal, much better than the DCT on the 458) Of course purists still want the manuals which may go the way of the dodo bird?

Anyway, only time will really tell who is wrong and who is right. At the end of the day, its all personal preference. I wouldn't really compare a Speciale to the 488GTB--its a totally different driving experience. For me I turned down a Speciale to get the 488 as I drive mostly in town/local highways and my upcoming track toy will be the GT3RS. For a weekend car the ride was too rough for my taste, but again that is me.......

I disagree. I think the 458 will be remembered as one of the all time great Ferraris, whereas the 488 will be just the next one in line. I have driven both, and, IMO, the difference in performance is not worth the tradeoff of losing the NA engine.

I agree! I still miss my 430 and especially the sound. The 430 sounded much better than the 458.. and I keep hearing the 360 sounded better than both. So performance is inversely proportional to performance I guess?

Some people may try to make themselves comfortable by saying that 488 actually sounds very good. Even my wife who doesn't like car at all could tell that the 488 sounds like a loud normal-car (she likes it though, because according to her, it sounds like our Mercedes but a little louder). I can guarantee you, the 488 is a louder 911 turbo, that's it. Forget about the screaming sound like race-cars. Any aftermarket exhaust will make it sound like those Subaru or Civic with straight pipe. It just won't scream, no matter what. Because it's not about the exhaust, it's the engine. This is not a highly tuned engine like the 458's.
Speaking about depreciation, IMO I think the 488 will be one of the worst. Ferrari is everything about passion, the look and the sound. Take FF for example, it's on Walmart now because of the look. 488's problem will be the sound, just like Cali T. Never in Ferrari's history they ever had a car sounded like this. But in some region, 488 is actually a big hit now because of the small engine, so the tax is much cheaper. But this is not the case for regions with no cheaper tax. It's ok if you don't care about sound, but some people who care just won't get it. Ferrari should offer 488 with 2 engines option.

I think the problem with the sound of the 488 is not that it's particularly bad, indeed it's quite reminiscent of the 430, which is a good thing. The problem is that it's one dimensional. It doesn't actually go anywhere, doesn't develop over a range, it's all rather 'one note'. The sound of the 458 changes as the revs rise, topping out at something that might just about be described as a scream. The 488 just plays the same tune from start to finish.

Have you driven a Mclaren 650s? If yes did the 488 feel as fast??

I had a 458 and I think the F430 I had before it sounded better. I think the 355 sounded better than either of those.
There is no doubt that the 488 sound will be different and not "as good" as the 458 was.
Until we have personally driven the 488 I think it's a little premature to judge the car strictly based on sound. Same goes for speculation on the depreciation of the 488.
I have a 488 on order and I will reserve judgement on it until I am behind the wheel. The exhaust note alone just isn't enough for me to be dissuaded.

This is a general problem with highly boosted TT engines. They may sound good at idle and low speeds, but as they spool up they lose more energy to the turbos so proportionately less energy goes into sound. No aftermarket exhaust will cure this. It's in the nature of the beast.

So what to do? If you really value the extra torque, there is your decision for you. If you look for other things that make for the driving experience, it is a different decision. There will be plenty of people in both camps.

Actually the sound of the 488 in of itself isn't that bad. Its just that in the video when the 458 comes up on it you really notice the difference. Ahhh..... progress where would we be without it? Seriously though, I'm excited to drive the new Ferrari offering. Going to take alot to beat the 458 experience but I'm sure Ferrari has figured it out. We'll see.

Exactly. Its not like Ferrari went and said "Okay we need to go turbo so lets make it so the car on whole is not as good as the 458." Im sure on every level except sound, the 488 is better than the 458. The throttle response might be slightly less but not enough to notice a massive difference. The 488 in a year will be praised, you watch. Yes everyone will always love the N/A v8 sound over the turbo, but there is no denying the 488 will be a better performance car on whole than the 458.
