Most people are more familiar with the older cars because there are significantly more of those cars than the cars built from 1980 and up. I own a 73 and 85. They made under 200 GT5-S's. GT5's and SI's production were very limited as well. Detomaso addressed a lot of the issues that Ford let slide through. Older car was mass produced, the newer car was hand built. Each have their own issues.

The yellow Grp IV car is my friends race car. That car used to go by a lot of Ferrari's and Lamborghini's at the Pocono Speedway. I believe it was clocked at over 200 mph back in the mid 90's. He is currently selling it. It basically has a Winston Cup motor in it. He used to restore Pantera's. He recently sold most of his parts to Wilkinson.

What's he asking? Is it too much work to turn it back to a street car?

I believe the Gp4 Panteras had flares back in '72!

It is possible to do anything, but it would require a fair amount of work.

luv the orginal gr4 cars especially with the door pillow and vinyl shell seats.

i think v-twelve was referring to the v-wing. anyhow gr4 pantera, wolf Ct along with the M1 and GR4 stratos all had one thing in common. DALLARA!

Flares and wide wheels were spec'ed by Dallara for the Detomaso factory race cars well before the Countach...(#2263 was delivered in Dec '71).

When he updated the Countach to S spec with flares he surely thought back to what he did with Detomaso as inspiration for his Lambo contract.

Also, regarding the black lower paint scheme on production cars, was Detomaso first here as well?

Only the wing...Detomaso not only debuted all of the other features before on the Pantera, they were also acquitted in European competition by factory Ferrari F1 driver Clay Regazzoni.

Well there it is, looks like Dallara should get the credit. Boy that's a beautiful car!

Lashss, I am not sure if Detomaso came up with that paint scheme. I guess looking through some old car books or magazines(American and European) from the 60's and 70's could possibly give an answer?

365bb boxer came out paris 71 with black lower as well as Monteverdi before in 70 i recall

that image was taken April 4 72 new york autoshow, great photo

the wing was used well over a decade earlier on the porsche 550 speedster. the Michael Mays who created that was a consultant at ferrari and when it appeared on the F1 car. im sure u can find another car that had it before hand!

Was the Hai with the black lower a replica made in the 80s-90s from spares?

The prototype was still magenta (at Gooding Monterey 2012) and the only other production model was all red from what I can recall but had a longer wheelbase. I'm not up on Hai history though...

Was the Detomaso Mangusta #1196 (for Bordinat) delivered with black lower paint treatment in 1969? I'll let the 'Goose experts chime in on that one. If so, that may be the winner.

If not, the 365BB may have been the first show car with the treatment.

Although, Detomaso again was actually delivering cars at the end of 1971 with the black lower. Influenced by the Bordinat Mangusta perhaps...

    Chicken or egg?

I see the Michael May wing on the 550 Spyder...great innovation for sure. The Wolf LP started a trend with factory wings on road cars as I can't think of anything else on the streets that had one.

I'm enjoying the info exchange...please keep it coming!

Here is my contribution to this thread. Two Pantera I've been lucky enough to live with. Both modified. Both 1971.

If I was to buy another one it would be completely stock. Either a 1974 with original Goodyear Arriva tires or a early 80's GT5 with flares and wrinkled leather interior.

I've always called the Pantera the Harley Davidson of exotics. There is not two alike.

Lower black hai paint early 70's ... Not sure on the exact date

I'm no expert but Bordinat conversion was done after it arrived in Dearborn I believe .. I saw the car this summer

There were many wings though less ostentatious that appeared on various muscle cars before the countach.

Fun thread! Just good to know stock pantera's a starting to be appreciated for what they were..

We have Panteras from ALL original, one with 798 original documented miles currently for sale in Hemmings, all the way to full blown show cars. Heres one we sold at Mecum 15 months ago, 117k. This past January we sold a 1972 chrome bumper car for 145k. For 145k you got everything modern. A/C that will blow you out, EFI, Wilwoods, Power steering, perfect paint, leather, lighting & sounds. If you want one, their not gettin' any cheaper! It's a balls to the wall go-cart. Go drive one & try to break it. They don't break. But it can kill you, you get too aggressive with one, you'll see.
Tune-ups? Couple hundred parts/labor. ZF? You can't break it. Cleveland engine? Blow it up if you can, their available all over the internet from a few hundred bucks. Build one up with 450-500 HP that will run on 93. Plus, they are surprisingly, welcome at Ferrari meets. Ferrari though, we have a clients 3.2Mondial Cabrio for sale, 87 red/tan, can't even get a quarter for it. Damn. Whats wrong with people. It's a FERARI CONVERTIBLE how much better can you get! Visit us. Pantera Miami.
