I think the rubber washers greatly increase the grip on the lid...good job!!!

I thought the rubber washers were factory. Definitely needed. Also, it is common knowledge that chrome will make your car faster :D.
You will need to have them plated.

You may be right, about having the washer glued on originally, but at this point, the knurled nuts are sold without them.

What scares me is the thought, that a lost nut could cause trouble in the cambelt area. (early cars without the rear cover) Therefore I use a drop of Loctite for them. The purple one. Not so strong like the blue Loctite, so I can still undo the nuts with my fingers.

    Best Regards
    Martin

Should the rubber washers be glued on?

Like this? A few years ago I dropped this threaded stud while replacing the thermostat, however, I didn't hear it hit the garage floor. After about 30 minutes of searching, I finally found it!

The 161/78 SPC (and the other SPC where the 104549 "gasket" is used) shows them as not glued on (an my ex-'78 weren't).

Murphy's law does say look in the most dangerous place first. You wont see it, but it will be there.

When I bought mine, it had wingnuts on it...I know, puke! I decided to check everywhere for some other missing bits and two original nuts were laying on the top of the block just under the waterpump feed...along with a carb gasket spacer. Used a bore scope to check those places. Two nuts are still AWOL.
