I am replacing two blown speakers in the doors of my '95 456GT, and am wondering if anyone has a lead on a good replacement? The Ricambi site says they are "woofers," but I see no reason not to use a high quality full range replacement, provided it fits and bolts up correctly. No luck searching the interchangeable parts thread. Also, any suggestions on an upgrade to the rear speakers, and are the grills easy to remove or are they a major PITA as with the in-dash tweeters?
I have posted info on this on other threads, under 456 radio I think. However, briefly, the front door speakers are 6"x 4" there are in effect a woofer as the tweeters are in the dash, they have caps on the back to act as a crossover/filter. The biggest problems is that there is not much depth in the door to fit replacement speakers. The original speakers are pretty crap and the whole system is pretty under-powered. Rears speakers are 6.5 " round woofers under the rear seat bolster, again the tweeters in the rear parcel shelf side trim have caps on them to act as crossovers.
Thanks. I know there are speakers in the rear above the parcel shelf, but I didn't realize there were also some speakers "under the rear seat bolster." How do I remove the bolster to gain access to them? As for the shallow 4X6 speakers, do you know of a suitable aftermarket replacement? Otherwise I'll probably take the blown units to a specialist (J-Mac) to have them rebuilt and hopefully upgraded. Do you see any issues with replacing the so-called woofers with full range units?
I have posted below a reply to another member re: what speakers I used and some info on the installation. I posted the wrong speaker sizes earlier, sorry, I did this install a few years ago so was posting from memory. If you are just replacing the front and rears speakers but not the tweeters or amp. then you do not need such high powered speaker as I used. The original system uses 50w per channel for the front and 30w per channel for the rears. It is a pretty cheap, low powered, poor sounding system with cheap speakers. I think you are best to remove a front and rear speaker and take them to a good car audio supplier and take their advice on suitable replacement speakers. The fronts have to be very thin as the door is not very deep. I think you may find that the system would be far too bright if you used two way speakers in the front. See below my note on the install. I used Hertz component speakers, I think 6x9 for the fronts and 5.5 inch rears, these speakers have crossovers with them, I put the front crossovers under the dash, and the rears behind the side rear interior panels. I used an Alpine FX 4 4 ch. power amp to drive all the speakers, I kept the original Sony head unit connecting to the power amp via the pre outs. I used a Connect2 iPod interface box which plugs into the CD changer input on the head unit, this gives you IPod input with some track/playlist control from the head unit. I removed the original CD changer. The biggest issue is fitting the tweeters in the dash and finding slim enough door speakers, as there is very little space in the front doors. I made up special mounts for the dash tweeters from nylon sheet. It all works very well and is incredible loud!!! Only problem is alternator noise pick up via the original head unit and a slight lack of very low bass as you can only fit 5.5 inch speakers in the rear under the seats because of the lack of space.
Follow up: I removed the speakers from the door panels (lord, what a royal PITA!), and found one had gotten wet some time ago and basically self destructed; the other was just worn. Took them to a speaker repair specialist (Jamac Speakers) for rebuilding / refurbishing. Looking forward to really good sound in my F-car, finally.
