correct tool kit 81 400i

Good day Paul,

I am sure others will chime in, but looking at the Owner's manuals... here is what I found:

400i 1979 - Tool Case
400i 1982 - Kidney Shaped Case
412 1986 - Tool Pouch

Given from the above, I would say yours (1981) should be a tool case. However, knowing how Ferrari does change things mid model... depending upon the month of your Car's Manufacture it could also be the Kidney shaped one as well.

Lastly, given that the 1983 Parts manual shows the Kidney shape case, I think it is likely the the earliest pouch version did not occur until 1984... Clearly in 1986 (412) the pouch version was in use.

My car, an '82 400iGT, #40555, came with the small black brief case that fits inside a plastic cradle inside the spare tire and leather tool roll.

 

Schumi, yours is a Series I correct?

I saw once a 1982 400i Automatic (series 2) with a brief case type kit in the trunk in a specific location (not inside the spare wheel), see the picture. I did not record the chassis number. I never saw till now a series 1 with a kidney shaped tool kit.

For my '81 400i I'm looking for the plastic cradle that holds the tool case inside the spare tire (or maybe the parts number - it would make looking for it a lot easier ).

btw: as far as I know, Ferrari changed to the kidney style tool box when they altered the self levelling system.
The spare wheel had to be turned around because the space was needed for the pump of the self levelling shocks.

I never found a part number for this item, I wish I could. It has gone missing on a lot of cars. I suppose it is worthwhile to try to replicate it through 3D printing.
