No, my FF does NOT have stupid start-stop :) ... Pull up to a traffic light or stop sign, if I sit for three seconds the engine quits and (of course) all the lights light up and it goes into Neutral. Turn the key off, back on and restart and all is well until the next full stop. If I happen to more simply hit the Start button the FF goes into the limp home mode, no power, misses a bit. A restart fixes that. And no, taking my foot off the brake and hitting the gas does nothing, as I said it does not have stupid start-stop, if I wanted to save gas and the earth I would have a Prius :D.

Anyone have the problem? If so, what fixed it? The dealer is picking her up later today. Fortunately I took delivery of a 2016 Cali T three weeks ago or I might be driving a Porsche Cayenne (yuk)

    Rick -

In our 2013 FF we had this happen a couple times. Once, literally in an FCA rally where our local dealer had a tech riding along who had the DEIS with him. He plugged the car in and found that (for some reason) the gearbox low pressure alarm had triggered (but all gearbox parameters were fine). He reset the code and it did not happen again.

However, as you'd imagine there are probably 100 reasons why the car might shut off - low fuel pressure, some sensor out of synch, a slight SW glitch. Hopefully the car registered a code and it will be an easy diagnosis.

So far no issues with our 15. Also, agree you need to cycle the ignition - since you said it goes into limp mode when you do a simple restart, that's a strong clue that it shut down itself due to an issue (self protection) at low revs/idle.

Hope it's quick, please keep us posted. BTW Cayennes are ok...

I had to think about what is "Stupid start stop," but I get it, or don't get it. It's worth paying another 100K just not to get it.

Nothing to add really. The OBD should pick up a fault and a reset should do it -- just like our relations with Putin. :(

Thought about this a bit more and an experiment if you can. Drive along at a low speed then go into neutral and release the gas... Does it die while moving along at say, 20 mph? Or just idle till you stop?

I'm thinking along the lines of entropy that perhaps it is a gearbox issue masking as a idle problem. Moving lets the engine continue.

Obviously do this somewhere safe since if it dies, you'll lose some steering and brake control...

Rick, you're just jealous of stop-start because your FF turned into a "start-stop-WTF?" FF. :D

I drive a gorgeous 06 Cayenne Turbo S that has never let me down, have had four of them so far. We all have our preference, but an FF driver saying yuck to a Cayenne made me smile. FF is growing on me slowly. Maybe the Cayenne will grow on Rick :) Cayenne's are fantastic vehicles, partial to the first gen myself.

The new Macan Turbo is fun, and smooth, and fast ... way cooler than the bloated Cayenne IMO, but not within a light year of the FF :)

Never happened to me thankfully. I'm sure it will be a straightforward fix once the dealer collects it. Keep us posted please. Very interested to hear what the problem is.

Not getting involved in the Porsche v Ferrari debate! :)

As i'm taking delivery of a 2013 FF this weekend, can i ask Mac if your 2015 has been more reliable than your previous FF (2013 was it?)

Justin, reliability was never an issue with my previous FF. It was a 2012 MY. It covered 20K odd miles as my daily driver over 21 months and it never missed a beat. The only issues I ever had with it were annoying electrical gremlins, warning lights etc, which always disappeared with a restart or at worst having to disconnect the battery. Aggravating, but the car never let me down and was used all year round. The 2015 FF seems to have ironed out all those issues fortunately. Although saying that, I did have my first warning light up last week, so never say never! Again, disappeared with a restart.

I'm sure you'll thoroughly enjoy your FF when it arrives this weekend! :)

    Best of luck!

    Mac.

Thanks Mac, hopefully i will have the same experience. I have come out of Maserati Granturismo ownership and had an almost identical experience. No real faults, just gremlins from time to time. In fact, i replaced the factory FIAMM battery for a Varta version and had no further problems so i guess low voltage/poor battery condition will always affect these modern computers on wheels that we drive! ;-)

Sounds like you'll be well prepared! I know most people advise to use the battery tender when you garage the car, but I only ever do when I go on holiday and know it won't be used for a couple of weeks. It may help if you get similar problems if you can be bothered!?

    Enjoy your new FF!

No problem FFMac! This is my second FF, with over 46,000 miles on my first and this '14 with 10,000 miles since January of this year have been very reliable. I post the problems just in case someone else has had the same problem, or a future FF owner has the same problem.

Over 30 years as a PCA member so I love Porsche. Ferrari is simply a far higher experience. I do drive the Porsche once in a while, from Toledo to Detroit Metro airport :)

So I gather that the error signal is translated into an instruction to shut down. Why only at idle?

Safety issue I imagine. Don't want to kill systems while in motion.

Of course if it is not a P0 level problem, why not just signal a warning and keep going??

Sounds right.... I guess a better question is why not go into limp mode?

FF is fixed. Ferrari said "Change the oil" so they did at 11,000 roughly, that did not help. The mechanic disconnected and reconnected the ECU's and now it is happy. The magic of computers.

Cool. Glad to hear that. A similar story of sorts: The TPMS system on my wife's 430 pooped out 2 years ago and would not recalibrate. The TPMS has its own controller so the technician tried resetting it. It booted up fine. He announced that the next time it poops out it will need to be replaced (2K). Two years ago and still works. :)
