OK, my Aussie gun control nut buddies, and 2A attackers, chill for a second.

It was a shotgun, not a handgun, so the issue of gun control is really an issue of PARENTAL control.

I'm assuming, of course, that even in Australia, one can own a shotgun for sport use, right? It's handguns and certain center fire and multi round shotguns you guys clamp down on, isn't it?

And here in the USA, even the most ardent gun control advocates don't usually talk about eliminating sporting rifles, just handguns.

So here we have a case of a dumb ass parent, or parents, living in a double wide in rural Tennessee leaving a shotgun around where an 11 year old can easily access it. That's nothing more than an idiot with bad parenting skills, not a handgun, which we all (I suspect) agree is the real focus of gun control, even in Australia. Did your mandatory buy back program focus on 12 gauge shotguns? From what I can see, a large variety of shotguns are still able to be legally possessed in Australia.

So, lets call this what it is, bad parenting, not bad policy, ok?

We know it was a shotgun, it doesn't change the issue .... it's the attitude towards guns that we don't like.

We have plenty of murder suicides for families happening with guns and when guns aren't handy some parents drive into lakes to kill their kids (men and women have been prosecuted of this crime).

Your nutters over there think they can solve all problems with a gun, hand gun, shotgun, assault rifle, etc .... it doesn't matter, just shoot someone and problem solved, when in fact more problems are created.

You know you're in trouble when an 11yo asks an 8yo to look at a dog and is refused so solves problem with a gun ... bad parenting yes but the proliferation of easy gun access has been created by the USA's slack gun laws .... he COULD have stabbed her but a gun was easier to access.

I know you're one of the more reasonable ones but from the 10,000' level we can see who created this problem

Well done. That's a remarkably sensible post.

It is truly terrifying that to a lot of people (especially if you dip your toe into the murky water that is the P & R section) the answer to everything is "more guns".

It's the general attitude to guns which has created a situation where this can happen, and it happens on a disturbingly regular basis.
To most reasonable people outside the US, this situation is utterly baffling.

And the curious thing is, the more guns they have, the more frightened the general population seems to feel... Go figure?

I would say its more a US society issue, when violent movies, tv shows, media, news, video games etc are glorified and promoted..more then other civilized nation that I have lived and worked in...
And when a boob is shown on TV the "family Values" people come out complaining...and yet the other violence entertainment goes on....and somehow that is ok...for "family Values"...
    Its not...

Not going to argue an 11 year old gun toting bully doesn't paint a very pretty picture of U.S. society, but it is an aberration, and perhaps as previously mentioned, he would have used a bat, knife or his fists if the gun had not been present. No way to tell for sure. His propensity for violence would have manifested itself with or without the gun.

And I think calling them nutters is an affront to the real nutters. Truth is, most of these guys may be disturbed in some way, but they're not crazy. They know what they're doing, they know it's wrong, and they do it anyway. And generally, they're cowards, taking their own lives at the end of the day when the police get close, rather than face the music for what they did.

The whole thing disgusts me, but I don't think you can condemn us all for the .0000000001% that unhinges and does something like this.

And it's simplistic to state that we see shoot first, ask questions later as our go to choice for problem solving. I can tell you, unequivocally that is NOT the way 99.9999% of Americans problem solve.

And finally, your PM at the time of your weapons confiscation program, did later state that the USA has a Constitution with a Bill of Rights (which you do not) and that would make confiscating our weapons a ****load more difficult/complicated than it was for Australia. (I'm paraphrasing, I can't find the quote at the moment.)

You can't simplify this into catchy phrases or wholesale condemnation of Americans, it's just not that easy.

I agree Dave, but the guns are too accessible , your #1 problem there
A LOT of movies show them that is the easy way out when they have to face the responsibility for what they've done .... but in saying that I've seen all those movies and it doesn't make me wanna blow my head off but I think the movies/media/violent video games have a LOT to answer

I'm sure there are a few more of you guys that abhor these scenarios but nobody is doing anything so to us you guys just look deranged for failing to become civilised.

And mental patients being discarded from your impossibly crazy medical system doesn't help
We have the VIC police for that

Like I said, we became a democracy without a civil war so when someone says "hey, this is stupid, can't you see that ??!! I'm taking your guns away from you but people who need them like farmers can keep them" , most of us (not you Speedy, you gun nut !!) said "OK"

    I can but it isn't true :)

I only condemn those idiots who have guns, and that seems to be a lot .......... in saying that, if I lived there permanently I'd be tempted to own one and being ex-military, at least I am trained to handle them correctly

I just feel sorry fr you guys that have a civilised attitude like you and norcal ..... people like Kaveman only re-inforce our belief you guys are in trouble

I don't understand how people that are afraid of individual liberty and personal responsibility call themselves the enlightened ones.
Abdication of responsibility to third party and believing in utopia is regressive, not progressive.

I guess reverse evolution is possible.

I read this thread to remind myself to never become like this.

    Carry on. Most entertaining.
