Thanks for taking my audiophile example completely out of text. And yes I do work on my audio system. Most audiophiles do.

The only non-enthusiasts are those who only care about the $$$ and the braggin´ rights.

Doing your own work is great, I´d love to do it, but personally I don´t have the time. It´s not just the time to do the work: you need years of learning to become a decent mechanic. Other people just doesn´t have the right space to work at home.

I have nothing to add, so here goes :D

I think I'm something of a general automotive enthusiast. I like most cars. Willing and interested to drive anything. I like cars that have a purpose and go about that purpose deliberately. I think Honda Accords are great, reasonably fun to drive and I refer to them and other similar cars as transportation pods. They are designed to transport people/things and they do it really well. I like ultra econo boxes, I like seeing how the engineers designed them specifically for their purpose. I can't afford a lot of cars but found a number of years back I could swing the Ferrari. I love how the engineers did what they did to fulfill the goals of the car. I like it the same way I like a Pinto or a 2CV. But if I can only have one of the above, I'll pick the Ferrari, thanks :)

The reason I work on the car is multiple. Working on my car forces me to dig beneath the surface to see what is going on in there. But for me it opens that world of how the engineers and designers built what they did for it's specific purpose. That is just my thing. Working on the car doesn't really impact what I understand the driving experience to be, it's a separate thing. I also get a jolt out of fixing something successfully. I enjoy personal success. That is just how my buttons work, don't think it necessarily makes me an enthusiast. I also have no qualms about paying to have work done on my car. If I had more discretionary money right now I'd pay to have the work to my car done. It would be nice to be driving it rather than looking for time to work on it.

I don't think I'm a Ferrari enthusiast beyond being an automotive enthusiast. If one has to have a car to enjoy, a Ferrari is a great place to be. It really has been an amazing experience. And generally the way others enjoy their cars has no sway in my feelings about my car. There are many here more passionate about Ferrari than I am. I'm just glad I can't be voted out of the club for others judging me worthy or not worthy. In the end they are automobiles. But they are special among the sea of automobiles in that they are built to be what they were meant to be. Sporting cars.

Just upping my post count. I might be a post count enthusiast too!

And just to beat up on the OP a bit, I'm thinking that if you were a general audio enthusiast you might enjoy all aspects of audio, good and bad, to have a feel for where it has been and where it is going. I don't have an ipod either, I listen to music on my 35 year old clock radio.

I enjoy the whole spectrum of experience. I like good coffee but have a soft spot in my heart for really bad coffee. Like good cars and lousy cars. Enjoy good music and bad (could be because I can't tell the difference) But I'm not completely consistent, for some reason I like women with good personalities but not so much with bad ones. ??

I think most of us start out as general audio enthusiasts but then we listen to a lot of gear and our ear gets more finely tuned. At that point it is hard to listen to bad audio.

There's a difference between an enthusiast and a snob.
By nature enthusiasts enjoy sharing their passions and don't look to exclude others by meaningless and arbitrary definitions.

Oh, fer ****'s sake, please... it's no different doing it from one amp to the next. Makes no difference how many watts the amp puts out.

You're really staining your own credibility now - as if you haven't served up plenty enough to do so already.

Are you saying you have tube amps that put out 1500 watts? I have been in this hobby for 35 years and I have never heard of a tube amp putting out 1500 watts per channel.

Some amps are self biasing and some you have to bias. So there is a difference.

yishih, I was referring to tube amps for audio systems. If you are talking amps for musical instruments or PA systems I don't know anything about that.

Only if you're using a different type of tube, or if you're replacing one pair of the same type of tubes with another that are far different on the output scale - assuming you're using rated pairs of tubes in the first place.

Otherwise - unless you have a way of measuring the output first - you have no way of telling, until you turn the piece of kit back on & say "Hmmm... that sounds different".

It's either an amplifier or a preamp - the the tubes still do the same thing/serve the same purpose... makes no difference what the piece of kit is used for.

Nice! I had the reissue as well with the Celestian Greenback 25s. Sold it along with my ES-335 a while back. Still have a few guitars though and another amp I'm too embarrassed to mention...Lol.

I'm just gonna go there & say that since we're on the subject of electronics - if you can't re-cap an SSL, or Neve, or Trident large-frame console, and have it actually work properly when you kick it back on again - you are CLEARLY NOT AN ENTHUSIAST!

Every since I can remember I've looked at every picture, movie, Tv show I could if I thought there was a Ferrari in it. My walls were covered in posters cut out of car magazines. Every time I walked into a store I looked at car mags. Then the internet came. I look/ look at every car site I can. I've worked my entire life focused on earning enough to provide for my family and have a Ferrari. I finally achieved the bar I set for myself and as a I purchased a 458. Being a new model and the only in my Garage I read this thread to find out I'm not an enthusiast. Ive immersed myself in car culture my entire life to come this thread just to find out this bit of information. I wish I had an older car so I too could be an enthusiast. Then again if I had an older car I still wouldn't work on it. Oh well. I guess I'll just enjoy my 458 the non enthusiast way.
