Does one have to play baseball to be an enthusiast?

No, just a perverted, disgusting sicko who posts too much information on the Internet.

    Off with your head!

Softball counts too, i believe, since they're similar, though not identical.

This. I was referring to RF transmitter amps in fact (and actual power outputs are probably more like 2,000-2,500 watts), but there's no substantive difference. And if there were, RF transmitting tube replacement would be more difficult and I still wouldn't make much of that difference. I've also done audio amps and other electronics too. Replacing tubes is better than just twiddling the knobs, but making much more of it than that is making a mountain out of a molehill.

I kind of lost interest in keeping up with the latest stuff a while ago, but my last setup is a pair of Thiel CS 3.6s driven by 750 watts/channel (because the Thiels have ridiculously low input impedance). I also have a pair of JBL Studio Reference Monitors and matching Subwoofer on my desktop computer for casual listening while I'm working. However, any equipment list is just throwing money at a hobby according to the OP.

So let's set my definition of an audio enthusiast. I've designed and built my own pre-amp, designed and built my own power-amp, designed and built my own speakers (three way, acoustic suspension). However, IMHO, someone is not an audio enthusiast if they don't have an ABX Comparator, so they can prove that all the equipment money spent actually buys something perceptibly better. Without one, they're just being manipulated by industry marketing, their erratic responses to subjective and transient perceptions, and confirmation bias.

    M.R.O.: QSC Audio ABX Comparator

As it turns out, I am an original owner of one of the 300 or so that were manufactured by QSC. Funny how my definition meets my situation. ;)

Since you are such the audio expert tell me what tube stereo amp puts out 1500 watts a channel.

Yes. It's right next to the room for the guys that bought blue ones.

(BTW. Not to derail the thread, but does anyone have inside info on the Blu Mirabeau 430 at Penske Wynn in Las Vegas? Considering a plane ticket to go see it... D'Ohh! Wait! That would mean I would be sent to "the room". Never mind.)

Yin, if you can build your own amp or preamp, more power to ya (pun intended? YOU DECIDE!) My cousin did just that once, many moons ago. I built a couple of guitar fx boxes from scratch, but that's about it.

"Any equipment list is just throwing money at a hobby" I never said that. Please don't misquote me.

I was seriously into audio in my early days. Member of the Audio Engineering Society for about 10 years. Never designed anything professionally, but just as a hobby.

I was referring to this, where you appear to be rephrasing the gist of an article that you seem to agree with:

I used to do maintenance myself on my 308 GT4, but hardly have time to do it myself anymore, so it goes off to the mechanic.

I guess that means I used to be an enthusiast, but am not one anymore.

I've been a member of this site for over 10 years. That's got to count for something, doesn't it?

Anyone crazy enough to own a GT/4 is an unmitigated enthusiast.

Before answering, I think we need to know what kind of sound system is in the GT4, and whether you built it yourself.

And you need to recuse yourself from the case based on that comment alone!!!

Au contraire. As Sophocles once said "it takes one to know one".

Well then you're a bit of a Luddite, aren't you?

Many audiophiles DO own and use them, most especially when they want to have tunes on their person while working out, jogging etc., or to bring an in-depth musical library with them to plug into their car audio system.

"The Absolute Sound" has frequent write ups about IPod docking systems for home use by audiophiles.

Get your head out of your ... ahem ... and look around; oh and please quit making inane comments about the High End, you're obviously out of your depth.

Really? He said that? I thought Aristotle had that one, and Sophocles popularized the retort "I know you are, but what am I?"

Obviously given my unfamiliarity, I am ... clearly... Not an enthusiast.

Thank you for setting me straight.

You're thinking of Moe Aristotle. My quote was from Larry Sophocles.

I have been to many audio shows. Not once did they use an I-pod for a source.
