I'm with you on that one. Why go searching to beat one more road when you can stay on the farm and bleat the Boer Goat? However, when speccing my Boer Goat, do I opt for a brass bell on the collar or an aftermarket uprated bronze bell? Or are bells considered ostentatious amongst members of Boer Goat Owners Clubs these days? I don't want to look like a new and inexperienced Boer Goat Herder at the meets. Should I get a long wooden staff and some Boer Goat Herder sandals?

    All the best,
    Andrew.

If you don't understand pleasure derived from looking at a Ferrari, then you haven't looked long enough. When the weather is too bad for me to drive, I sometimes stand in the garage looking at my car. It's a work of art. How can it not be pleasurable to look at? The reason car shows are packed with people is because people derive pleasure from looking at awesome automobiles.

Driving is WAY better. Owning is a dream. But I don't have to work on my own car to be in love with it. In fact, it's BECAUSE I love my car so much that I only let qualified people touch it.

    Inquiring minds need to know.

do you change the belt (collar) yearly? every 30,000 bleats?

What will happen if the collar fails?

What's the proper tension for a collar? Is it bad if too tight? Could something seize up?

I pity you in that your priorities are so skewed, but if working is enjoyable for you at this phase in your life then have at it.

Just know at some point due to health or age issues you will be unable to define yourself this way and will have to find an alternative. That may be a difficult time for you if you have eschewed living chasing the next dollar. It is a balance of all aspects.

These comments of course assumes you really do work 14/7 and that wasn't a bit of insecure bluster.

***Read this***. Absolutely true story! Happened last week.

I do have a heard of pigmy goats to help keep our 8 acres clear of brush.

I accidentally left the back door to the garage open. getting into the shower before work, I hear my wife screaming "GET, GET OUT GOATS." I look outside and see the goats running out of the open garage door, and I see the sheets I use to cover it on the floor.

Yup, at least one got up on the hood, scratched hood, fenders, and plastic headlight lenses. Was i pissed, yes but not at the goats, at myself. Luckily no dents! The scratches buffed out, but lenses are still scratched. Just took the car to a show this weekend. I actually bragged about the incident and pointed out the scratched lenses to people and told the story. I'm keeping the lenses scratched for now (yes I do know how to fix'em). Makes a great car conversation just wish the wife got a picture though.

Yes, I know it doesn't quite pronounce GOAT, but given the pronunciation associated with the Pontiac flavor-- Perhaps it works?

For some the experience of wrenching on the car themselves is a source of pleasure and increases enjoyment of ownership.

If you stretch to buy the car and have no choice but to do the maintenance yourself, that would not increase enjoyment. A sense of accomplishment perhaps of a chore done, but not enjoyment.

For me personally I have done both. My bikes I do everything myself except change tires. While I have also done extensive maintenance or repairs on cars when I take a notion, these days I let someone else do it most of the time.

I would think almost anyone with patience and even a modicum of mechanical ability could do simple things on their Ferraris. Brake rotor & pad change with fluid flush is easy. Changing the oil is easy if a bit messy and removing floor panels is a pain.

Valve adjustments and belt changes are obviously more challenging, I totally get why owners allow the pros to do them.

Are people who track their cars more of an enthusiast as compared to those who carefully limit their miles on a pristine garage queen?

Some of the most rabid enthusiasts are too young to drive, own or maintain a car.

Or a goat for that matter.

Maybe/kind of. My definition of a car enthusiast is someone who buys/owns cars primarily for reasons other than transportation, investment, or status. If you go out to the garage just to look at the car, you're probably an enthusiast.

There's a special kind of joy and heartache ("uh... where do I find mouse fur for the dash?") in vintage/classic cars that the Camry/SUV/minivan owner probably views as irrelevant.

There are also cars like the Lotus Elise/Exige (and many vintage cars) that are so impractical that the only reason you would possibly own one (or even know what one was) is because you're an enthusiast.

Regarding the OP, I've known many guys who just worked on their own cars because they didn't want to pay a professional mechanic, not because of any great love for the machine but to save some cash. The other aspect is that there's really not much you can do on the latest cars, so the notion of tinkering in the garage is more of an old car thing anyway. So... I don't think whether someone works on his own car is any kind of definitive answer.

We need a market valuation thread on these.

The Boer Goat, can it be broken? If so I can imagine a western saddle as opposed to an English one. Just want to give you some options for gear and what not.

That's a great point that hasn't been brought up yet. I definitely feel that guys that track their cars are more enthusiasts types than garage queen owners.

I don't know why "enthusiast" (or "fan") is a title anybody would even want to claim.

I think that's an asinine statement.

I would agree with this, frankly, I love cars, and sharing time with others that enjoy the same things I do, I don't see why it has to even have a label, as long as it's fun, who gives a f*** what it's called?

Arrogant, pompous prigs need labels. I can enjoy my hobbies without defining myself by them.

is a race car driver employed by a team less enthusiastic because he is not required to work on the car

there is no relationship between being enthusiastic about something and physically engaging to maintain or be involved with that object of enthusiasm

Wholeheartedly agree, all this blahblahblah about what "makes" this and that, makes me want to do a burnout on someone's face, or hop on my goat's back and ride off into the abyss, Le Sigh* a man can dream

How do you service a Boer Goat?
(my mind is over revving now!)
I mean, to be a true Boer Goat Enthusiast, you have to service it yourself, correct?

I only have the BEST shop...errr, f(arm hand?) in the country service my Boer, I named him Blair, and he's Classiche Certified, we took a Double Platinum Award in August at the Concours de Chevre, unfortunately he's due next year (year 5!!!) for a hoof adjustment, but it's a "hoof in" job, runs about $5,000, NBD though, worth every cent!

Insecure? Are you always so insulting to people you don't even know? I don't lie or exaggerate, and I'm done having this conversation with you. My life is grand. I don't need advice from you or anyone else. How are my priorities skewed if I love my work? Perhaps everyone who doesn't love their work has skewed priorities. And my job does not define me. It pays for everything I want to do. Everyone should be so lucky.

Darn. We just missed an auction yesterday.

    Welcome to Menger Creek Ranch!

Perhaps someone can get the results?

What does a Condition 1 Boer go for? Does color matter? Is there an equivalent of "Resell Red"?
