Testarossa Engine Lid Foam

Does anyone know where to get a replacement for the foam that is on the underside of the engine deck lid?

 

Just so you know it is not required and was only intended to be used on US cars as noise insulation to comply with our sound level limits. Not all US cars even had it.


There are many foams available that will work but despite looking long and hard I never found a source besides the very expensive OE foam that looked correct.

 

Another thing to consider, even if you find a factory foam pad, how old is it? When was it made? You might be buying a spendy piece of brittle dust in a bag.

 

I think Mel made his own that looked perfect. There was thread about a year or two ago about it - did a quick look, but couldn't find it.

That foam is 24x24.

The TR hood pad is 32x31.


And for $160 I'd strip the foam and glue and paint the fiberglass satin black the way the factory did instead.

 

My '85 doesn't have the foam. But I've stripped the glue off another cover and that glue is a royal PITA to remove completely. Stuff is tenacious.

.. but it's more than double the price for the larger size.
The stuff from Ferrari for the 512TR was poorer quality and much more expensive IIRC, this has about the right color in a hi temp silicone foam which should last.

 

You're right. The TR512 piece is half the size for twice the money.

 

It takes a little time but I have done enough of them it is a little easier.

Some really want the foam but I usually advise to just paint it. Either way is correct.

 

looks just like the honeycomb foam that is the OEM hood pad on my '88 W126 Benz. Might be able to buy a hood pad from this model car and cut it to size for far less then the factory foam.

 

That foam looks quite a bit different. If an OE look is desired that won't do it. If an OE look is not important just leave if off and get the best of both worlds.

 

Just don't bother!!!

My foam finally started falling apart. I just stripped the remnants and painted it.

 

Correct, it was about the 512TR .... oem part $ 600 or so

Went to an airco maintenance shop and got a piece of one square meter (left-over part) for $ 20 or so

There are 2 version, just rubber of with sticky back

Get the rubber material that has the glue already on it, strip off the plastic and stick it on its place

Use an electric knive and do the job (made one more for Edvar's 512TR)

Can be done to any car

Wow Mel that carving knife must be as old as the car. Ive nit seen one of them for years lol

That's all it needs ... and with scissors it will not work that neat !

Something to consider, should you ever ponder showing or having the car judged, or putting it in for Classiche...if you have the incorrect foam, you may very well be docked points, but if you have no foam, you will almost certainly not be docked points, as judges can't ascertain whether foam was original to your car or not.

 

Thankfully no need mine has no foam.

 

I'm planning on having the car judged. It has the original foam on it and it is starting to deteriorate. I don't want to be docked points for it. If the foam is removed, points would be deducted as well since any judge would know these cars had foam installed.

 

Incorrect, some trs were delivered with foam some without, there is no record that i'm aware of for whether a car was built with foam or not, and certainly none available to judges at an event. As such, per judges i have asked, better to not have any foam than to have the wrong foam or heavily deteriorated foam.

 

If I read Brian's words correctly. You will not lose points. Brian is a judge at top events.

 

Thats just how mine is Brian. I have never understood the function of the foam and it has never been picked up at Concourse events.

Does anyone with a standard (euro) version TR (that has never been imported the US) have the foam? Or, if you have such a euro TR without the foam, please indicate that too. Would love to see such a poll for all TR version/situation/year to get a snapshot of the population (although, maybe, many have been molested/changed/removed by now) -- they went to such crazy lengths in other areas to try to keep the weight down, they must have had some reason to add...
