the big white thing moves when you put the stalk up and down, and it gets pushed towards the steering wheel. The white tab is what the plastic ring inside the steering wheel column touches to turn off the turn signal.

The white thing has a tiny spring which spring loads the movement back from the steeing wheel.

The white thing sits between two black plastic "jaws". The jaws are spring loaded. You can see the spring for these on the back of the assembly in the previous picture.

At the jaw end of the jaws, is a tiny white circular thing. I beleive there is supposed to be one on each jaw, but as you can see in the picture, I have it on only one jaw. This white circular thing just slides on to the jaw.

I beleive this is why my stalk is droopy. Later on I found the other white circular thing on the floor in the car. It must have fell out when I pulled the assembly off.

at this point, the wheels came off the cart so to speak. I was on the bench playing with these pieces trying to figure out how they fit together and how the switch is suppose to work.

The little spring goes from the white thing and hooks onto the assembly to allow the white thing to move towards and away from the steering wheel.

The big spring connects the jaws together, which I think holds the white thing in place.

I was playing around with this. I tried hooking the little spring onto it's place on the assembly when it sprung off and fell on the floor.........

    ***** ***** ****ing *** ***** **** ****

The stupid little spring is about half the size of a grain of rice. My garage floor is kept pretty clean, but not THAT clean.

I then spent the next hour on my hands and knees trying to find the stupid spring. After a frustrating long time, I asked my kids to come out to the garage and look.

It was at this point that I found the other white circular thing that I mentioned earlier. The bench is about 6 feet from the car, so I thought it was feasble for the spring to jump 6 feet, open the car door, and roll onto the carpet. A bit desperate - yes - but at least I found the other white circular thing.

Good news, with about 5 mins before I had to leave, my son found the little spring.

So I know have all the parts to hopefully put this back together. It'll be a few weeks before I'm back up there to try and fix it....

28mm ring nut socket. We have a Hill Engineering version available in stock. Some people grind or dremel their own, if its only going to be used a few times and they don't mind replacing the nut each time.

Got to work on the car again this past weekend. Back to fixing the turn signal. Start by hooking the little spring onto the top of the black base

The other piece left is the "big" spring. It seems impossible to fit this without the whole thing falling apart so I believe the correct reassembly is to connect the black base onto the car first. In this pic I have one of the four screws holding it in.

4 screws back in. Quick test seemed to indicate that this now works. Left turn signal stays down and doesn't have the droopy feel to it !

Steering wheel base reattached and special nut screwed down. I didn't have manual to hand so couldn't look up the torque setting so I guessed it.

Lower housing put on. I put the two small screws in first as the connect the lower housing to the steering column. The 4 larger screws connect the upper and lower housing.

good news and bad news at this point. the good news is that the stalk is no longer droopy. it holds down both left and right, and if you turn the wheel it correctly "clicks" the stalk back to the center position.

the bad news is that I still have the problem when I turn the lights on, the left turn signal doesn't work. The left turn signal flashes at a higher rate than the right, which seems to me like there is a short somewhere. Probably the next place to look would be the flasher relay. at some point I will do that.

Wouldn't be right if the 308 didn't get any love, so I got a new plate for that also. I really have to get back to fixing the clutch on the 308....
