Sextants were still in use on Hercs, it was part of my engineering course at Wagga Wagga but never did it again.

First saw electronic astral navigation on G model 111s, there was a glass portal on the top of the nose electronics bay .... this was in '80 at Nellis AFB for Red Flag

I don't really understand the point of this. Tiltrotors are faster than superbikes but regular helicopters aren't? I don't know. Anyway, the Ducati looks cool, and the flight attendant has a great (and hopefully unintentional) "GOD, rich people are the f*cking WORST" facial expression ;)

it would have been better if the plane at the end exploded.

Haha Mt Home boys, they would be lucky to get in the air.

I spent a LOT of time at Mt Home near Boise, bloody cold and isolated.

They had 3 squadrons when I was there (red, green and blue) with just over 100 111s in total.

For the Giant Voice exercises with them it was always interesting to watch them send about 6+ aircraft to the exercise gateway IP with the 2 most serviceable sent into the corridor whereas our guys would just turn and burn 2 aircraft for the exercise and 6 hours later they'd come back.

We would then go onto Nellis for Red Flag

The RAAF sent four aircraft to Sydney for a two-plane job in 2000, but that might have been because a LOT of people would've seen it on telly if anything had gone wrong :)

Obviously the quality of the maintenance had dropped off after I left :p

We never sent more aircraft than we needed while I was there.

The closest I saw to a "no show" was on the way back from the US once where a 111 had a problem in Kwajelin, automatic flight control problem (I was the specialist for this).

Fixed it overnight and the next morning the pilot and nav said to me as the crew chief, "if it lights up and we see power to the instruments we're off!! !!" :p

Then our bloody C-130 had a weather radar problem after start up so the Radtechs jumped out , put in a new fuse and off we went ..... the whole time the blackhanders were giving us the evil eye

I loved my time in the RAAF but lots of boring stuff in between the highlights but to this day I will NOT finish working on the car until all tools, nuts and bolts, parts and fluids have been accounted for.

    I even have a shadow board :p

Frank Lloyd Wright inspired, built over a stream? If ever there was a way to sell my wife on buying an aeroplane, it's to tell her it comes with a house with that description! :D

In other news, Breitling (like Red Bull) sure do spend a ton of money keeping a bunch of nice OHOS flying.

I don't know exactly why, but the wing planform view of a DC-3 is just perfect.
