There's more to it than the two championships. Every race is an event in itself, and if the last three races are exciting the spectators and TV audiences will be entertained and happy.
+1 best of the rest n all that, in fact thinking about it, if there is no action up front ( as in when the leader romps off), the camera tends to go where the action is.
Did any football (soccer) league cancel their last games because the champion was already crowned??? What a weird suggestion this is...
I'd rather watch the last 3 races of the season in an already decided championship series where rules are the same the whole year than a cliffhanger result in a series where the rules are changed at will, with a points payout so convoluted it's seldom if ever publicized. The 1st is racing, the 2nd is exhibition.
Sorry... getting to the playoffs and winning the world series are not the same thing. They've been racing all year to win the WCC and WDC. The season is over. The WCC and WDC are finalized. There's nothing more to prove. It's over. "Oh look! McLaren made it out of Q3!" The difference is that people can get seriously hurt or killed in these three meaningless exhibition races. They take that risk in every race but now there's nothing to shoot for. The champagne has gone flat. Watching 2 Mercs run around in Hamilton vs Nico "DramaLand" for 3 more races is not worth watching. Autoweek has a point. Even the silly "double points" last race couldn't save this season.
Judging from the amount of people sitting on the grand stands today at a free practice day a lot of Mexicans think different. They look forward to see this all year long and you want to take it away from them just because you are not interested anymore? You are free to do something different this weekend or do you need someone decide for you because you are afraid ending up watching it nevertheless? That is nothing against you in person, just about this argument! And would you be interested to organize the last GP of the season knowing that there is a good chance that it will never happen??? I think: leave it like it is and they will see what the audience will make out of it, both at the track and in front of TV...
The races are worth watching on their own, regardless of any championship. People get too obsessed by championship, I feel, and just look at the points, the scoreboard, the winner, etc... and miss the big picture out there. There is the racing to watch, the moves, the driving, the overtakings, the fights, the progress, the incidents, etc... It's not all about the mathematical result. I go at my local track (Brands Hatch, South of London) whenever I can, and see plenty of different sort of racing (saloons, GT, F4, historics, bikes, sidecars, Superbikes, sport cars, touring cars, etc...). I don't care about positions in the championships, or who leads what, etc... I just enjoy the racing, the passes, the atmosphere, the noise, the smell, visiting the paddock. For me it's a nice way to enjoy my favourite sport. So why deprive people who were looking forwards to their once-a-year F1 race, of their GP, because the championship has already been decided? Why would the drivers and the teams not be allowed to complete the F1 calendar, and have the races they were expecting? I really cannot see the argument to curtail the F1 season, 3 races from the end. Beside the legal aspect, F1 would loose all credibility if it wasn't delivering what it promises. As for the people who get bored with it, they can always turn off the TV, or not go to the races.
Exactly Bill if I can call you that. if the gladiator kills the first Lion is the show over NO, lets race, smell the fumes, the rubber, the whole event, whether is F1 or any other event, its the sport and the atmosphere and as you say the moves and the hard work that people put in to be there on the grid. Lets enjoy the Sport even at Knockhill in Scotland wearing three layers of clothing hiding behind two Umbrella's eating cold bacon rolls can hardly see the cars or Bikes for driving rain. Cancel the last three Races what a lot of Toosh
Should that happen everytime there is a runaway champion? Vettel? Schumacher? Senna? Not much to be gained, certainly, but I do want to see the Mexico circuit. The other races may not draw much interest though.
Then you believe F1 is not a sport but merely an exhibition. And, that's OK. But there is no more incentive for drivers or teams to prove anything else this year aside from getting some points so they can get some cash. All of the teams are already looking at next year and putting resources there. What's the point of watching racing if the participants don't care who wins? Watch Nico win the last three races. You think Hamilton is going to muscle him out now like at the USGP? No way. There's no more point to race hard for most of the field.
If USA GP is any indication...best wheel to wheel racing this year. These guys want to pass regardless. So l will continue to record and watch when the spirit moves me. Best
I bet Hamilton would do it again if having the position, because you can say whatever you want of him but he is going all in for the race victory every time he is in the car...No way he will cruise just because he already won the WDC, that is not in his nature
Yes there is. Drivers still have to give their best, to justify their retainers, and hopefully improve their position in the ranking, to keep their job, or earn a better drive in future. Teams have to show their progress to their sponsors; they would expect to maintain their exposure obtain more funds for the next year, etc...
TRUE: But the teams are not investing in getting better for this year. They just want to put on a show while maximizing profit at this point. So does the Circus. I do agree the drivers want to prove themselves to get a better deal or whatever. But the teams aren't in the same camp for the most part. The facts are --- it's not the same. And that means it's not as interesting because the questions have been answered. Does anyone really care who ends up in 4th place?
So the only reason to watch is for the titles? Not for me, I'd still enjoy watching the races if there were no titles. It can add some drama, but in the end I watch the races for the racing.
But would you watch the races if no one racing cared what the results were? What's the point of racing? Just to go around fast in a car?
Does everyone on a 5th place baseball team not try to do their best in the last month of the season? Sure. They are professionals and they are trying to keep up their stats for next season. Does anyone care? No.
