I noticed today that the red transmission warning light (the one in the speedometer) came on for a split second when changing down the gears. I have an F1 gearbox.

Then when I put the car in sport mode and with WOT the transmission would get stuck in gear with the revs bouncing off the red line until I put it in neutral. The transmission warning light came on when this happened.

The light only comes on for literally a split second. It's not constant or flashing.

    Anyone had this before?

I will take the car to the garage anyway next week.

Justin- If you are in Sport, the F1 system does not shift for you nearing redline and she will bounce off the rpm limiter every time. In Normal, she will shift for you nearing redline.

First thing I would do is have the fluid changed and the system bled. Should be done every three years, but most folks do not do that. Ferrari did not figure that out until the 599 was introduced. Then let someone with an SD2 or equivalent do some diagnosis on the system.

Thanks Terry. I have been wondering if it's my driving. I got a bit nervous after it "played up" today and didn't try it again.

I will take it out again tomorrow and see if it's just me!

However, I do worry that something isn't right as the transmission light comes on. I'm pretty sure the fluids were changed last year. I will check.

    Thanks for the advice.

Is your reverse lever slightly loose ? Do you still have to lift it to get reverse ?

There is a standard fault as the lever wears that can give a false indication which is why there's a Hills revised bracket and even an old photo thread on how to change it

Of course it may not be this....

Reverse is fine. Still have to lift to engage.

Sounds like low pressure in the f1 system.

Check the contacts on the brake light bulbs.
Check the contacts to the third brake light bar.
Check for intermittent brake switch on pedal.
These are tied to the F1 diagnostic circuitry.

I am not saying that you have the same problem, however I fixed my car with a new brake light switch after I was getting an intermittent transmission light on my car.
I have a post regarding the troubleshooting that I did for my brake pedal switch, but I can't seem to find it right now.

Baffled. why on non-1st gears that the brake switch has anything to do with the f1 light?
I understand on 1st gear it might has something to do with it.

    Thanks for all the comments.

I took the car to the dealer yesterday and it turns out the cause was a severe lack of oil in the transmission. They think there may be a small leak somewhere as it shouldn't lose so much. They are looking into it.

lack of oil in the gearbox or the f1 system?

f1 system oil is red, gearbox oil is gear oil with brownish color, much like engine oil when new

Just keeping you up to date...they tell me that it's caused by a worn thrust bearing that they are changing this week. I do know the thrust bearing was a bit worn so it does need doing...although not a cheap job!

I don't know, but the first time I noticed my light was on a hard 2-3 shift. It doesn't make sense, but I guess it all depends on how the computer is programmed.
The funny part is that I had 2 separate mechanics tell me that my problem was definitely not the switch and one mechanic tell me that it is highly unlikely, but may be the switch and told me to change it since it's only $35. It was the switch! 5,000 miles and 2 years later, not a single error light!

Keep us updated please, if the new bearing solves the problem

While you are at it, have your mechanic check the F1 pump relay. They were underspec'd in the 360 and have a history of burning out. I was getting an intermittent gearbox light and a relay replacement took care of it.

+999 I got tired of mine failing and decided to convert it to a solid state relay. It's been over 2,000 miles on the conversion and it works great! :)
